just wondering if there are set number of waves in encounters or whether you need to kill a boss tto stop spawns?
Im wondering coz i just had to drop the difficulty on the Ser Aldrik fight coz i just couldnt cope with all the mobs...maybe it was the small space but there seemed to be hundreds of the buggers...or maybe Anders is a crap healer (or just ignored my tactics)
Wave triggers?

There is a fixed number of waves per encounter. Dissent finale, aka Ser Alrik, consists of two waves. However, due to space constraints and strong line-up it remains one of the most tactically demanding encounters in the game.

all waves are limited ,however for some encounters (boss mages mostly) if you kill boss fast the subsequent waves might not spawn.
there is easy way up form Alrik if you can pull off the damage - focus fire the templar hunter that is there at start , becup your ranged through door (due to ranged settings they will try to get distance running inside the boss room like headless chickens eating ackstabs and such). If you use hold position ranged behaviour will cause the tactics to lock up.
Eitherway ranged through door brittle templar hunter -> archers lance + walking bomb -kaboom if done right sil alrik dies there. pull back melee - the encounter breaks -new waves wont aggro and you can even save ;]

The waves of enemies are only triggered when you are in certain area that trigger the combat. I confirmed that if we run out of that region and present in another region, the wave effect will not occurs unless we enter that area again! So you can consider this is a point to change tactics when you are heavily outnumbered and overwhelmed.

I think mostly new waves trigger when you kill a certain number of current enemies. And some are timed I think.

Yep. When you eliminated more than 2/3 of the previous wave, so the second wave will be immediately trigger, unless you are in another area.
