If you side with the mages and let Anders go, he will confront you in the Gallows and ask that you let him help you. If you refuse he will wish you well and leave. If you accept he will be a party member once again.

My Hawke was too angry at Anders to even talk to him at the Gallows in that situation.  I saw Anders there but pointedly ignored him, so he never "confronted" me.

Info needed if you can clarify: So Anders will appear in the Templar Hall with the other companions, and you have to initiate dialogue with him to get him to rejoin or leave?

If you don't talk to him at all, is he still there fighting the templars (before Orsino goes Harvester) or does he just vanish?

Haven't finished reading all the replies yet (on my lunch break, so not a lot of time!) but commenting on these points too for now:

@Gervaise, DiebytheSword, ElvaliaRavenHart regarding crossover ending: Interesting! I don't suppose any of you can youtube the ending or at least screenshot the dialogue? I've done a mage (aggressive) who sided with the templars but just got the standard templar ending. Very curious.

@ ElvaliaRavenHart regarding the spared mages and killer templar: I don't think that praying templar kills the mages you spared as they are led off straight after the dialogue they're in. However, I am familiar with him going hostile. You remember that room with the small circle of templars and mages kneeling and praying? A desire demons appears shortly after you enter the room, and the whole lot of them go hostile -- at this point the templar in the courtyard also goes hostile. I suspect he isn't meant to, and whoever coded the fight didn't figure for non-hostile NPCs being in the area. You have to run all the way out of the tower to kill the guy, which is bloody annoying. >.<

@Gervaise regarding Aveline staying in the party - Out of curiosity, do you remember if you did all her quests?

The Templar that goes hostile... in my playthroughs there is a mage standing beside him, one that is alive when I start sweeping the the individual gallow rooms (i.e. where we find Sandal etc....). When I come back out that mage is dead on the ground. In my next playthrough I'll try to get a screenshot of this. It will be awhile, since I started a new game and I'm in Act 1 currently.

Yes, I believe I did do all of Averline's requests.  Also on one occasion I inadvertantly clipped on a heart dialogue and couldn't be bothered to go back and reload just to undo it but never took it any further, so I suppose she could have an unrequited love for me.  She did give me a very passionate kiss when I brought her and Donnick together.   She also makes it quite clear that she is risking everything for the sake of friendship because she thought I ought to side with the Templars.  And like all my other companions who are still with me, she clearly trusts me.   In fact I suppose the reason I still have them all with me (apart from Isabella) is my ability to see both sides of the argument, apart from Anders of course, where I am absolute that the end did not justify the means - he should not have bombed the Chantry and for that matter he should have never done the deal with Justice.

I should be able to capture with fraps.  If I have a save point near enough to the end I'll try to get it up to youtube.
