So I know I get bonus damage and higher chance for criticals if I get "backstabs", my question is, do I need to manually place my character BEHIND an enemy that's not facing me to get these backstabs or does my character automatically try for them?
I ask because one time I swear I was just watching my character auto fight after selecting a target for him, and he maneuvered around BEHIND the target and started attacking there. Maybe a bug... but it got me wandering... do I need to be manually moving my rogue behind enemies or will the rogue try to do it automatically?
Playing as a backstabbing rogue... question

Your rogue will automatically move behind enemy to perform backstabs if you have already upgraded the "Combat movement". If not, of course you have to do it manually. It is also right in the case the enemies focus on other allies and you rogue still perform backstabs as well. That's means your game works well, don't worry.

Combat movement doesn't automaticall move your character; it gives you a wider area to attack from while behind an enemy in which to get a backstab.

I just started playing a rogue a few days ago, and during the origin story (City Elf), I don't remember seeing my character do the "automatic move behind target" thing that he does now after getting Combat Movement. It's like, I'll tell him to attack a target, and if the target moves, he'll follow and then automatically move behind the target. So what else could be causing that behavior? I'm not complaining about it of course, although sometimes I just wish he'd attack immediately and not worry about optimizing his positioning.

Quick Advice....If your going to be playing backstab rogue Double Dagger + Lethality + Pumping Cunning will give you the most damage. Your relative lack of dex will make you much weaker when attacking from the front however but this can be mitigated.....

Backstabs are basicaly garanteed hit and crits. Usualy does require manual positioning though. Some mods will fix this though.
Cunning focused Bard/Assassin will give the biggest benefit to your party and your damage.
Duelist is more for non backstabing melee rogues (Str based rogues) and Ranger is a flavour choice since it just adds a pet.
All of the Bard and Assassin abilitys use Cunning attribute to deteremine the strength of their effects.
