Sometimes I get crafting stuffs or ~20 silver. Depends on their level. You should be able to do it several times each battle, so it really adds up.
Oh man, that gave me an idea, I wonder if I can set Liliana to use "steal" through tactics.

I have my rogue use steal on my tank's target , I do get all sorts of stuff, I once stole close to a sovereign in money, it adds up in time, oh and if you have master stealth it seems it's easier to steal if stealthed , not that you get that much better stuff from the people you couldn't previously steal, but as someone said it adds up

I have a tactic set up on Leliana that sets stealing as her primary move to the enemy.
Nearest Enemy visible -> Activate ability: Steal
It adds up, I actually stole 4 sovereign from a werewolf at one point, pretty funny. As said above, I mainly get a lot of potions.

Ya know, this is one of those things that I never thought really worth it. But ya, if you you think about it, over the course of a game you can earn a lot of money from this.

since you will not get equipment from it and money is infinite (potent lyrium potions, dunno if this is considered as an exploit) its useless.

Apparently the cost of ingredients for potent potions is less than the potion itself, but I think it's a net gain of 20 some odd silver per transition. But, seeing as stealing from enemies will also work, I don't see why you'd need to put yourself through that grinder.
