Any other method to correct this issue other than reinstalling the game (solution posted in a 7 month old thread). I would rather not reinstal and deal with the uncertainty of loosing progress to import in me3. Trying to play arrival. I've replaced one of my 2 dvd drives and my videocard since last playing me2. I've also installed a new sata card, plugged my new sata dvd drive to my motherboard, and plugged the hard drive that was in the mother board into the sata card. My other DVD drive is an ide drive. I believe my DVD drive letters have changed in all this fooling around. Hard drives all retained their previous drive letters.

I had this issue earlier today, but caused by a different reason. It's possible that the game puts a registry key to look at only a specific drive letter, but I haven't seen games do that in a very long time.
My solution was to find a masseffect2.exe that had the cd auth crap stripped out of it. The DLC arrival overwrights the old me2 exe, or at lest in my case it did. Maybe there is an issue with that 'new' me2 exe file?

Also, you can make a backup of your saved games in case you decide to reinstall the game. They usually located in the my documents folder.
See the 1.5 Re-installation section on the Mass Effect 2 PC Tech FAQ sticky.

If you uninstall, you will be asked if you want to keep your saved games.
If you can recall what your old drive letter was, you can use the administrative tools -> computer management option in control panel to rename the dvd drive back to its old designation.

I'll try changing drive letters back and see what happens.
I should also post some specs while Im waiting for an answer:
Win7 64bit
560Ti nvidia GPU on an MSI Frozr board (replaced an AMD 4870 previously used to run ME2)
I think I have an E8400 CPU
4Gigs memory

No love from disc check after renaming drive letters. Oh well.
I'll probably wait a couple days to see if anyone who has encountered the problem to venture an answer. But if I did find the time to reinstall, I assume it will be necessary to reinstall all the DLC as well if I wanted to start my saved game with all the gear and story choices I had. And I'll go give that sticky a gander as well.
Thanks.

Absolute stupid question of the day time:
Have you tried both DVD drives?? I have had issues where only one drive will work for a game, even though I have two drives that can work for most.

Yup, tried that thanks. When renaming drive letters, I also tried both old drive letters on both drives. I use to have my drives set up in a master slave arrangement. But with the one new sata drive, and the one old remaining ide drive, that's no longer necessary.
I wonder if I ran the patch 1.02 again it would fix things up. I wonder if I can run patch 1.02 again. Things to try I guess.

I think I win the bonehead move of the week award (with BioWare runners up). I was trying to use disc 2 in the drive to play the game. Its likely that Disc 1 was required. I could have sworn mass effect didn't go past 1 DVD.
After uninstalling, I put the DVD from my "jewel" case into the drive to reinstall. It was then that BioWare asked for disc 1. I went through my Disc holder on my desk and found disc one in the place I keep all my at hand discs for game playing.
I can't say for sure that this was the problem. Will have to see what message I get when I reinstall. If its the same failed to authenticate error, then BioWare gets the prize.

Final verdict: looks like this is the reason. Game will not accept disc 2 for verification. And s simple poorly written error message leading to a couple hours of lost time. Oh well.
