I have Game version 1.02 downloaded and purchased from Steam.

Specs are as follows:
AMD Phenom II X4 965BE @ 3.4 GHz
ATI HD4870 512MB - AMD Catalyst version 11.2
4gigs of RAM
DirectX 11
Windows 7 64-bit

When I try to run Mass Effect 2 I get the error: "Failed to initialize the physics system. Please ensure you have an updated version of the PhysX System Software installed."This causes the game to refuse to launch.

The only way I can get around this is to uninstall PhysX version 9.10.0513 through the control panel and then install version 9.09.0814 in the redist folder.

But when I do that, I don't have the latest version of PhysX, so I can't play any of the games that require 9.10.0513. Manually jumping back and forth between versions is utterly ridiculous, I can't believe this hasn't been fixed in the 9 months the latest version has been out...

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Firstly, verify your Steam cache intergrity, then install the PhysX version which came with ME2. Then install the latest without uninstalling the older version, as this should simply update the files that require updating, and keep the legacy files which ME2 needs.

I'm pretty sure I've already tried that. But I'll give it another go. (I'll assume you meant uninstalling PhysX first, so I'm going to do that.)

Uninstall the new one, yes, then install the game release version, then install the new one again over the top without uninstalling the old one.

Although it has come to my attention that a fair fwe Steam users are having this problem, whereas it doesnt seem to be a problem with the disk version.

Yep, just did it all in that order and it's still giving the same error. :(

I really just want to play the game without having to go through 5 mins of tweaking every time I launch it.

It sounds like a problem you will have to bring up with Steam support unfortunately. I'm running 9.10.0513 on the disk version without error.

Thanks for trying to help. I'll try and chase it up with Steam.

It looks like the game magically fixed itself after a couple of reboots.

Who cares about your whinging. You havent registered your game on the forums, nor have you bothered filling out a correct problem report.
Take it up with EA support, they are the ones who are paid to put up with your childish ranting.
