Depends on the mage build

Also depends on your fighting style. Being a force mage is actually very useful when fighting large groups of enemies. If you have your party with say, two warriors, a rogue, and your mage Hawke, Force Mage may make things easier on everyone, but not really needed. But if you have only one warrior, one rogue, and your mage Hawke plus another Mage or rogue in the party, it becomes more useful in battle. Plus it's fun to watch enemies fly about willy-nilly.

I mainly use blood magic in long, drawn-out fights when I run out of mana (like vs the Arishok) Of course blood magic is useful against groups of enemies too, well, two spells are.

Force mage has that +100 fortitude boost, which at least IMO on nightmare is incredibly useful. Qunari are also vulnerable to force, so you can cluster them easily for a vanguard warrior to clear out (and stagger them, to combo with a rogue).

The Force -- use it.

It's indeed useful, slows them down and makes them sliding across the ground, also lifting them up and smashing them to the ground. Also it looks sick on DX9, but not on DX11 (wtf?)

As others have said, it depends on the build. I almost always go Force, though. The 100 Fortitude bump means you probably won't have your spells interrupted, plus the spells themselves are great for CC. Pull of the Abyss followed by Glyph or Paralysis or Chain Lightning or Cone of Cold all allow for a ton of enemies to be taken down by a single spell. Gravitic Ring can be a life-saver in some boss fights by slowing them enough for you to get to safety. Even an upgraded Fist of the Maker has its uses.

Honestly, what keeps me away from BM more than anything else is the lack of story reactivity to it. It breaks my immersion to be impaling myself on my staff and everyone from Anders to Fenris is just cool with it. So I stay away.

I almost always play a force mage. Like highcastle says, blood magic would be more appealing if it had more of an impact. Blood magic does have a lot of raw power in it, though, and has one of most powerful spells available. But the +100 fortitude is very useful.

I use both just because when I combine them it's kind demonic on how much enemy group damage I can do.

I'm on my first mage playthrough (rogue is usually my first choice), and I'm totally digging the force.

Once my Hawke started getting some of those skills under her belt, we were unstoppable. I can't believe it took me 5 playthroughs to finally try this out.

I probably won't ever do the blood mage specialization. Merrill can be the cutter of the group.

I went and got what I needed for the 100 fortitude and put the rest into blood magic. Being able to cast forever was pretty damn useful. Trying to keep my mana up was a pain in the ass.

^^ This. I like having a giant, unending healthbar, and never worry about mana potions. That said, I take Force and BM for my specs. I use Anders, so I don't need to be a healer.
