Friend of mine is playing BG2 for the first time. He's a thief but wanted a familiar so bad! So he's got the Thief ability use any item, uses the scroll to summon the familiar and.....
...the game crashes.
Over and over and over.
Not for any other scroll he tries to use, just that one. Is there a patch for this? Anybody know anything?

Has he tried summoning a familiar using the 'normal' exploit for scrolls, i.e. right-click on a potion in inventory as though you are going to drink that and then replace the potion with scroll before coming out of inventory.

A thief CAN'T have familiars. You have to shadow'keeper one to his bag (buggy) or give him a level of mage (best).

What you mean is a thief can't legally have a familiar. Any PC can get a familiar using the potion to scroll exploit listed above.

He tried the exploit, it still crashed the game. I gave him the link to this thread.

The exploit only allows him to cast the scroll and is redundent because he has UAI. Yes he can cast the scroll in the same as he would say 'Magic Missiles' but the second part is scripted to see what type of MAGE is casting in order to decide what familiar he gets i.e. cat, rabbit, etc, sence he is not currently any legal type of mage that the game can reconise the end result will be a crash... every time!
Its possible that you have some mod installed that allows no-mage familiars (a script which in effect tells the game you have 1 level of mage?) but the basic game = mage only... again shadowkeeper is your best bet for a happy ending.

I've seen multiple references to this exploit from other people over many years, so it's well-known and certainly not something restricted to me. The type of familiar summoned is dependent on your alignment - not on the type of mage you are. Give it a try - you might be pleasantly surprised
.
I agree that, in principle, this route should be no different from UAI. However, UAI should allow a familiar to appear. The fact that it doesn't means there is a bug in the way it is being implemented for the player - and it seems at least possible that this exploit would get round that bug.

Sorry Grond0, perhaps I was not clear enough.
You are correct in that your alignment picks the familiar but I meant to say, there are two different sets of familiars allowed by the basic game. The first is called mage familiars (most common) and the second is for a special class called Beast Master (pets in effect). There is a script (computer code) that runs when the 'Find Familiar' spell is cast that checks what class you are... this is what I believe is crashing his game.
He has used the trick and still crashed his game so we know thats out.
@Zavrian I would like to know what race and class his character is... also what mods are installed?
The fixpack mod; is the one I was thinking about when I said you might have a mod that allows non-mage familiars... understand that this is NOT official (I don't use it my self) and the readme is very vague about their changes to familiars scripting. You have to understand that this is an old game an the fixpack mod is a collection of smaller patches done by people that have moved on. If you want to try it then this is the download page http://www.gibberlin...loads/index.php

I think I understand better now - thanks for the clarification. I do have the G3 fixpack installed as this is a pre-requisite for use of the Baldurs Gate Trilogy mod, so that might be the difference. However, as I noted above the casting of find familiar via a potion is something that goes back a long way (much longer than the G3 fixpack has been around). A quick google gives me a discussion from 2002 and it was clearly not new then (and neither were there any references to any need for mods). Therefore I still suspect it is something to do with the player's installation - might be worth checking that this has been patched to the latest official version. Could also install the G3 fixpack if he doesn't have that - as you note this addresses a number of bugs with familiars that were present in the vanilla game.
