I don't see no point in putting defense runes in my armor slots since it's already at its cap (80%). I'm a DW Rogue.
Defense or Armor Runes?

If you're already at your cap then there is indeed no point and you should go with armor or elemental runes.

Which elemental attacks are the most common/most important to get resists against in general?

I throw in fire and lightning runes since Merrill apparently hates me...
Need to change her tactics.

I believe the Nightmare gods advise fire & spirit.

@Rubicon - How did you manage to get lightning ff? haha unless merrill really hates you and decides to break the spell mechanics I think the only lightning damage you can receive in the game comes from profane/ARW and saarebas.
As for the common elements to get immune to, it really depends on what spells/setups you're using. As frustratemyself was saying, fire immunity is good if you have an elemental mage spamming firestorms and/or a Varric who takes potshots at you with bursting arrows; and spirit immunity is good if you're using a walking bomb setup as it allows your immune melee unit to get amongst disorientated enemies (and for a S&S perform CCCs) and actually help trigger the blast without any worries of friendly fire. Fire and spirit also have benefits against several enemy types.
Lightning is only really useful for the deep roads expedition and if you're IN1 who seems to like to bathe in the futile attempts of the qunari mages trying to electrocute him haha. Lightning immunity isn't necessary for friendly fire (lightning spells don't ff) or in a party setup (as you can usually take out any saarebas before they can cast any spells).
I'm not a 'nightmare god' but hopefully this helps

Mainly interested in resists for a Hard level playthrough...figured fire, lightning and armor runes were the way to go. Didn't feel like having to worry about my team trying to kill me, they do a great job of offing themselves as it is.

From what i remember its only worth having 1 armor/defense rune in an item as if you out a 2nd in you barely get anything from it due to diminishing returns.

I give everyone fire since the dragons, fire traps and the final battle with fire machines.
Secondary runes, I prefer spirit runes or armour for casters (since arcanes have spirit attacks) and frost resistence for warriors (again, since arcanes have that frost AoE attack).
