it's my first character, i created a mage that is healing focused with some damage spells as a second option on the hard difficulty.

i am around level 6 with all the 4 healing spells (6 or 8 somewhere around there) and things have been smooth up to this point. now, however, i am having an insanely frustrating time on some mission to light a tower in a battle as i have been given these 2 random tower guard teammates who suck, so it's basically me, aleister and these 2 redshirts and i have to keep them healed through waves of enemies like 8-10 at a time and one of the guys just always is dead he is no help at all at least the other one stays alive and is pretty tough.

all that being said i find myself always out of mana and now i finally made it to the boss but i've used every mana potion i had just to get that far and now i can't kill the boss without mana potions cuz no way i can keep these healed without like 50 mana potions.

at the same time i'm getting annoyed that i have had to pass up like 50 treasure chests because i can't open the locks which makes me question if i should restart as a rogue (but i don't really like rogue i more like healer).

anyways, i was hoping someone could give me some advice on what to do here.
am i supposed to only have aleister as my teammate at this point? i'm thinking maybe i did something wrong and i should have a stronger team, i dunno.

basically i let my fighters go in there and fight and i heal them which is how most fights go but they end up taking more damage than i can heal.

i have a pretty good staff and the 4 healing spells so i think i am a fairly adequate healer at this point so i can't imagine that is the problem.

The problem is: At that time, your team is fairly weak in comparison with the ogre. So my advise is: DO NOT FIGHT WITH HIM IN MELEE COMBAT. Running and evading cleverly is your vital tactics at this point. If the ogre try to attack someone in your squad, have him run around the tower and have all of the other members in your party attack in range. With this tactics, you can eventually defeat him in nightmare mode without losing any potion.
Try again and have fun!!!

thanks for the reply.

the only problem i see with that strategy is that i am the only player who can use any ranged attack and i have to heal.

i have aleister who is only has tanking abilities
and i have 2 guards one of which also has the same tanking abilities and this other total waste of space who he does have some ranged attacks but he doesn't even have a dang long range weapon equipped with em.. i swear this guy is the biggest waste. he has died probably 40 times in the dungeon run. it's been the 3 of us that has survived vs 8-10 enemies each wave.

i will attempt to use your strategy regardless because i will try anything at this point.

if someone could also give me some long term advice as well.. should i stay with healer or go rogue for the pick lock? is healer a viable role to play as your main player? thanks.

Of course you must obtain some bow at this point of quest. Why hesitate to use them? After all, you don't need a healer in your team to deal with that ugly big-horn bull.
Btw, I recommend you try some strategy of luring the enemy in the tower and deal with smaller group of them instead of trying to face with a horde of darkspawn, it's really a damn bad tactics that can ruin your squad

the bow i had i gave to this other guy who is no longer with me (maybe i have a spare one somewhere i'll try and check). and if this guy has ranged attacks why didn't he have a bow to begin with?

i have no choice where that is concerned, as soon as i open the door a wave of 8-10 enemies come pouring out running to us from all the nearby doors, i'm not sure what i could do differently to limit the number.

for example: i am in a corridor and there is 2 doors on the left side... i open the first door and immediately every mob from both rooms comes running out attacking us i don't even go inside the room or anything they just run out.

Every NPC can use range attack, you can provide them bows and they will do their jobs. Remember to set their tactics to range attack and be sure you have some bow, crossbow in your inventory.
To reduce the number of the enemes in your case, the tactics is simple enough: Let the other guys stay far from the enemy and order them to hold, just send one to lure them. The enemies just seek that guy, try to lure them to your team's position and then, go and open offense, With this tactics, you don't have to deal with the large number of enemies at the same time because the others don't know you're dealing with their allies since they are far from the battle. If this method is still not available, try to eliminate the ranged-attack enemy first, and then deal with the melee will be easier.

I'll basically just second lionalio's points. I think DA:O actually gets slightly easier as it goes along. I mean, the bosses get tougher, but so do you, and the hardest fights in the game can be the early ones when you're pretty damn weak. So don't feel bad that this is a tough battle.
As for companions, yes Alistair is the only one you should have picked up by now (it's a long game). And yes there are lots of chests you've missed out on by not being a rogue, but you'll pick up a rogue pretty soon. Being able to get the early chests is one of the pros of playing a rogue, but it's a difficult class to play and I wouldn't recommend it for a newbie.
As for the Ogre, if you've been looting as you go, you've probably picked up a bow or two. Check your inventory. Everyone can use a bow, and ranged combat is definitely best for this one. To be honest you only really NEED two ranged characters, so if it's only you and that one other guy, that's still fine. Just have one fire while the other kites. Kiting feels cheesey, but it works.

(Kiting means running around while the ogre chases but cant catch you)
