Greetings, I'm new to Mass Effect, actually haven’t even put the disc in my Xbox yet.
You see the thing is my girlfriend got me Mass Effect 2, and I have yet to even play the first Mass Effect. I heard in a review that decisions made in the first ME would effect what happen in ME2. So was wondering should I hold off till I play the first one before I start this one. Would really like to play them in order but am looking to start ME2 anyways.

So figuring that I might just go ahead and start ME2, I would like to be caught up on what happen in ME1. If someone could tell me what I essentially need to know about ME1 to be able to play ME2 and understand what’s going on that would be great. Or maybe point me at a website that paraphrases what happens in ME1 that would also help me out.
