I rolled up a Drow Wiz, and my question is this:  What should I have equipped to maximize my attack rolls for the ranged touch attack spells like Disintegrate?  Does it have to be a ranged weapon, like a Longbow, or can I apply the same attack bonus using a longsword (my attack bonus is vastly different between these two things, my str is quite low)?  And does the attack bonus on a weapon affect the roll (IE Longsword +2, or any other attack-increasing enchantment)?

And finally, if I choose to go EK, should I to use a finesse-able weapon (with the feat) to maximize my rolls and still be combat-viable?  My str is rather low unbuffed, I think its 10, and my dex is rather higher, I think 14/16.

I can't find a clear answer by searching the forums, btw.

Thanks in advance!

Here's the way it's supposed to work:  touch attacks

So that's a yes to using a longbow I take it...? I already found that page but I was hoping for a more direct answer.

Whatever weapon you carry shouldn't make any difference at all. The weapon is not used.

[edit]  I just ran an experiment and partially confirmed this ... and partially refuted it.

The type of weapon (bow, mace, sword, etc.) does not matter.  The Bonus on the weapon is used; either Attack Bonus or Enhancement Bonus.

You can test things like this quickly (and fun, too) with this little mod:  Vordan's Hero Creator

I will go back and have a look at whether Weapon Finesse matters.  I didn't check.  Got my givefeat 42 ready to go.

[re-edit]  No difference from Weapon Finesse.  The +20 mace and the +20 morningstar (and the +20 crossbow) all gave the same effects.

Did you test melee touch attacks?  Weapon Finesse should not affect ranged touch attacks since ranged attacks already use DEX (although it would be interesting to know if Zen Archery matters), but they should affect melee touch attacks.

Also it is my understanding that equipping an adamantine weapon will cause any physical damage from your spells to bypass DR.  I think that is all spells, not just touch attacks, though.  Still, tangentially relevant.

I only checked ranged - warlock eldritch blast.  I'm not sure how you would go about testing melee.  What uses MTA that can be done repeatedly?

[edit]  A Wand of Vampiric Touch should do it.  Maybe I'll give it a try.

[re-edit]  The wand concept didn't work;  it didn't show the attack rolls.  I had to relevel as a Wizard.  Result:  nothing seemed to impact the Melee Touch Attack, neither the type of weapon, nor Weapon Finesse  -  nor the weapon's attack bonus, which is surprising.  Posted Image   And Zen Archery didn't help with RTAs.

[re-re-edit]  I exported the character and used her in Uninvited Guests and tried a few other things.  The behavior was the same, i.e. it's not unique to the Vordan's mod.  I should point out I have Kaedrin's and Tony K's installed, nothing else that should make any difference.

I also note that having or not having the relevant Weapon Focus feats doesn't change this effect;  also, the +3 Attack vs. Reptilians from Pitney's club wasn't applied, only the standard +1.
