Isabella left like she normally does with the relic, but this time she never returned to the game.  Why did this happen and how can I prevent it in the future.  Thanks.

For her to return you need to:
1) Have her rivalry or friendship at 50%.
2) Do her questioning beliefs for Act 2.

7th playthrough? I applaud you sir.
*Slow-clap*
Seriously though, you need to have her friendship/rivalry above 50% from what I know

The main thing is doing her 'Questioning Beliefs' quest for Act 2 (triggered at 50% friend/rivalry) before you do 'To Catch a Thief.'

If you haven't done this she'll leave and not come back even if you're in a romance with her.

By eh, playing it? The same way some people played Origins that much?

^ I doubt I'd ever play Origins that much in just a few years but can see myself playing DA2 that many times in a few months. I'm just curently distracted by other things.

This. And the fact that Origins had much higher replay value. In DA2, the only reasons to replay I found, is if you want to try out a different class, be pro-mage, pro-templar or neutral, try out a different personality, or turn in Isabela and spare the good 'ol Arishok, hand Fenris over to Danarius, or murder-knife Anders. DA2 pretty much railroads you into everything else. Act 3 is a major offender. That's three playthroughs.

Much easier, hell I had 40 hour runthroughs of DAO while still making liberal use of the runscript killallhostiles command.

Still my hours with DAO went into 4 digits >.>

Awesome game but the idea of doing another 80 hour run through kills all the desire out of me.  Thankfully I'm a PC player, I have console commands and I will use them!

Read my previous post on how DA2 is limited to a maximum of three playthroughs in order to experience ALL of DA2.

No.

Also, this post isn't a reply to what I said, so why did you quote me?

I did both, but lost her anyway.  You also have to tell her that you will give her the artifact (in the scene before entering the building to retrieve it)

On my first playthrough, i.e. "the Diplomat Does the Right Thing," I told her that we needed to give the artifact to the Arishok to stop the sacking of the city.  She threw up her hands and agreed to it - then snagged the artifact and never looked back.

Thanks all. I think Sister Helen hit it. I told Isabella we should give the relic to the Arishok. I am on 7th playthru because I am retired. lol

You DO NOT have to tell her she can keep the artifact. I have completed the game four times, and I have always told her to give the book to the Qunari, and she has always come back.

I think there may be something strange going on since the patch. I did everything the same on my 5th playthrough (just finished up last night), and Isabela didn't return. I had her friendship maxed, told her she could have the relic, didn't give her away to the Arishok (played dumb when asked where it was), and still she didn't return. Dang that hussy. I even loaded a saved game and tried it a few different ways, and got shafted each time.

The worst part is that to craft the Elixir of Heroism, you need Ambrosia, which you can only get from Castillon's Landing, which is her Act 3 quest. I didn't mind not having her in my party this last time, since I wasn't taking her along much anyway, but dang it that a crafting resource was only available in a companion quest.

Oh oh. Hmmm....a bug? Darn, she's my favorite chara--I don't like losing her.

To my knowledge, all you need to do is get up to 50% friendship/rivalry, and do her Questioning Beliefs quest in Act 2 before starting To Catch a Thief.

On my last playthrough, my Hawke had a rivalry romance with her and told her to give the relic back to the Qunari, and she still came back.

Keep in mind, Isabela does not immediately rejoin your party in Act 3. You have to talk to her in the Hanged Man before she rejoins.

@arcelonious

True, but I did everything in regard to friendship and her quests the same as I typically do. She didn't make any kind of appearance at the Viscount's Keep before I fought the Arishok, which was a pretty good sign that I was S.O.L.

Like I said, I wasn't taking her out much anyway, and finished that playthrough last night, so I think I've come to peace with it. I'm on pt #6 now, and if the same thing happens, I'll know something is up.
