Hello

I've got an issue loading Mass Effect 1 through Steam. No
matter what I do, the game will not load. I've tried running Steam and
Mass Effect with administrator right, different compatibility modes, and
it still will not load.

I'm running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 with an AMD Phenom 9150e Quad Core, nVidia GTS 250.

The error message I get is:

Problem signature:
  Problem Event Name:    APPCRASH
  Application Name:    MassEffect.exe
  Application Version:    1.2.20608.0
  Application Timestamp:    4a55fea1

If anyone can give me some advice, I'd be very appreciate.

APPCRASH is often caused by files corrupting the registry from some other program that stops the program launching. There are a couple of things you can try first uninstall ME (you will be allowed to keep any saves you have still) and then you need to do a full virus and spyware sweep if you don't have a spyware remover i'd reccomend PC tools Spyware Doctor. After you have found and removed everything reinstall the game and try to see if it works. As an extra you can also download CCleaner and use that to analyze and then clean any unwanted tempoary files and cache files. do this before reinstalling the game if you use it.

If that fails then a clean boot may help you find the program that is causing the error you can find out how to do that here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/331796

Thanks a lot, Moondoggie, I'll give it a shot. I even had technical support baffled by this one!

It's quite difficult to solve since in many cases the problem causing it is different but those two methords are the ones i've seen with the most success up to now. I'm not personally aware of any particular programs that may clash with Mass Effect but if somebody else knows of any they'll probably be able to comment.

Clean boot didn't work either.

By searching through all the forums I can find, I hear that AMD Phenom processors are not always compatible, same with Realtek audio. Can anyone confirm?

Their been patches that fix Realtek issues. Assuming you have latest drivers and not running any other software besides steam/game. Drivers are audio, video, and chipset. Check your motherboard site.

Try deleting ClientRegistry.blob file in your steam folder. Let steam re-download.

Got it!!!

I tried running as admin, running in compatibility mode, reinstalling, running in safe mode, running in clean boot, and nothing worked.

This solution is courtesy of n_gamer at http://forums.steamp...d.php?t=1873451

Some Windows 7 users haven't been able to run the game. Mass Effect just won't start. For some, changing the compatibility to Windows XP seems to have worked, running the executable as admin, or they were simply missing some files in the game's cache, but in many other cases nothing seems to work. Don't panic over your lost money just yet; it's fixable.

Though Steam should have updated the game to its latest patch (1.02) it doesn't seem to do this, which is actually the solution to this entire problem. You'll have to download the patch manually from the Bioware website. It's compatible with the Steam version and can be found here:

http://masseffect.bi...ates/index.html

From then on you can run the game hassle-free. No additional settings required. Hope this helps future players.

Enjoy the game!

That's a new one i never saw the lack of Patched game cause an APPCRASH it usually just refuses to start. I'll be sure to go the patch route first next time since it's easer. Thanks for the follow up i'm sure it'll help some others with the same problem.

Enjoy playing

Thank you so much for this. I bought ME1 during the steam sale, and haven't been able to play. I tried everything everyone else has said and this finally worked. <3

Thank you so much! I have the DVD "EA Value Games" copy, and it wouldn't start even the config in windows 7. EA's support page for ME1 is full of a lot of runaround B$, and no help at all finding patches for the game. This is exactly what I needed. I'm very thankful for these forums.

As an end note to this discussion, I disabled automatic updating for Mass Effect 1 through Steam. I don't know whether any more patches will be released, but I don't want my copy updated.

I doubt you need to worry about anymore patches anytime soon. Steam seems to be screwy with patching ME1 for some reason i guess it doesn't install it properly and causes problems.
