I'm stuck, not the first battle but the second, where you fight the high dragon and he calls all his minions.  Anyone have any suggestions for this fight?  I keep getting wiped and don't care to turn down the difficulty...

Have you got runes of fire-warding?
That and cold spells/staves will be useful. If you tell me what part you're having problems perhaps I might be able to give more specific advice :)

In terms of positioning, as soon as you see the dragon fly off the ground, move your team to the entrance of the pit. Even though you cant go all the way up, as the fight locks you in, its a great position in order to avoid being surrounded by the whelps and works wonders with a 3 ranged and tank party. Im really dreading trying this fight on my dual wield rogue :/

Fire resistance seems to be pretty much mandatory

I pretty much wipe at the third minion assault with the two dragons popping out.

relied on Anders a lot here, i've always been the same with games i will not spend any money on upgrades thinking theres always going to be something i need pots of gold for later but managed fairly well with Aveline, Anders, Isabella and my ele mage. theres far too many variables here but you absolutely need a good shield and party buffs from your damage chars and as mr_afk said fire resist if you can, also when you get 2 strong enemies at once focus on one at a time :)

You either need two warriors capable of tanking a dragon by themselves (most likely Avaline + Hawke, unless your Fenris is exceptionally tough), or two mages rotating stuns (eg: petrify + horror) to keep the second dragon locked up while you slay the first. A third option I just thought of is that Varric does quite well kiting things if he has embellishment (+20% run speed) and a lot of room.

Personally I did the fight with Avaline, Varric, Merril and Mage Hawke on hard... and it was pretty much a cakewalk.

Run Varric run! :)
In regards to the two dragons popping out I suppose an alternative to tanking/chain CC/kiting is to just kill them really fast? This is the act3 dragon fight correct?
Basically you want to unload CCCs on them. A brittle-archer's lance/assassinate will go a long way. Stagger CCCs like crushing prison/haemorrhage/chain lightning will also help. Basically if you just focus CCCs and cold spells/staves on one dragon it'll die pretty fast. If you are a force mage you could also just drop a grav ring on the other dragon to reduce the pressure on having to kill the first dragon fast - locking up the other dragon by any other way is probably a little to complicated for my liking as you really want to lock up the dragon you're attacking so that you can deal more unopposed damage.

i'm sure you've figured it out already anyway but hope this helps.
I may also do the dragon fight sometime over the next few days so I might record a way to do it.. but bit busy atm so nothing too soon though :(

Take them down fast. I'm currently playing as a DW rogue Assassin/Duelist. Had Merrill or Anders use Petrify/Dessicate to brittle the bigger dragons in the mob then used Mark of Death + Assassinate.
Also when the High Dragon stops spitting homing fireballs from the ledge & Hawkes health was getting low (& all heals on cool down) I switched to a bow and kept her back until her health recovered a bit.

There are places you can position your group where you only fight one dragon at a time. you can also position yourself where the High Dragon can not see you and in the best case does not move. Several time this happened and I waited until my party healed before resuming combat.

Pretty much best idea is 1 tank who can resist knockdowns, either fenris or avaline. Then a healer, so yourself or anders (or merrill if you have it modded for creation tree).

After that I prefer having everyone else ranged. Brittle the dragons when they come down and finish them quick with CCC. Use cold damage alot. Use fire resistence runes on everyone. Anders gets a rune slot during the "Best Served Cold" quest.

I managed to do this without a healer on hard mode, but it was tough using potions, poisons and mythals favour.

I hve discovered the dragon got a weak spot. Attack at its back legs, then you notice it move, run in a semi circle so that you end up at the same spot again. Poor dragon will breath fire where it spotted you some 10 seconds earlier so it will always miss, and you can hammer away 4-5 strikes before you move again. This way bonepit dragon is pretty useless.. to avoid ranged attacks from cliff, keep running side ways.. This battle is just boring as it takes time, and as difficult as putting on a hat :-)

Okay your mage needs to cast crushing prison then wintersgrasp ASAP when the dragon lands. Your rogue needs to use confusion and any other debilitating poisons he/she has ASAP. Your tank needs to keep dancing around and hitting that thing while it's disabled, and whoever is left (usually Hawke) needs to hit it any way he/she can with as much force as possible. Think of it as killing the archdemon in DAO without any of the armies to help you.

The usual problem in this fight isn't with the minions it is with the fireballs from the High Dragon while you mess around with minions. Before you go kit out everyone with Fire Resistance runes to minimize the effect of that.

Space your party well so each fireball doesn't get 2-3 at the same time. Hold your party in place so they don't cluster up. You want as many ranged people as you can bring you really just need one "tank" to draw attention and frankly the Dog can do that pretty darn well (don't forget him).

I usually chain my party so 3 of the 4 attack the same minion to kill it quickly - wounding 4 minions is not nearly as effective as killing one. I then use Hawke to run his own fight.

When the dragon lands you want to hit it with every DoT spell you have and also any things to stop movement (petrify). You can fire at the dragon on the hill BTW if you have a ranged character I've actually left Hawke to fight with the team and shot away at him on the hill with Sebastian.

I thought this fight would be as hard as the one in Dragon Age Origins. I even bought special fire resistance wear for my companions and the Dragonblood armor in preparation. But as long as I kept my distance, let Fenris be the tank, my group suffered very few serious damages. My Hawke is a rogue who used a bow along with Varric's superior crossbow abilities. Anders was my mage, but he only had to group heal twice. Once the damage was close to nothing I switched to melee weapons and charged. I'm not complaining. That takes away hours of frustration that I usually would have suffered,

Storywise, that's what disappointed me. I thought maybe they should have developed that story more as it is a more personal story for Hawke. The dwarven thaig was a missed opportunity for further side quests. Maybe one of the noble dwarven houses could have offered to help pay Hawke and Hubert for exclusive rights to the thaig. Maybe you could have had the opportunity to save some of the miners if you spared the life of the Ferelden in Act 2. It really could have played out more.

Its easy. If Hawke is Mage and you bring Merrill + Aveline and Fenris. Merrill will pretty much keep the little ones at bay plus Mage Hawke can do a few AOE on them,  Tempest will usually take them out enough to not be much bother. The two tanks will focus on the High Dragon. With Mage Hawke just attack the High Dragon non-stop. Malcolm's Honor staff is great for this for its high Spirit damage.

Also load up on fire protection runes on ALL.

I usually have a mage Hawke, with Aveline tanking, then use Merril and Varic as my team. Hawke always has at least the first level healing spell, because I rarely use Anders

1) build up fire resistance - I leave the Bone Pit until late in the game and put any object that have fire resistance (rings, staffs, shields, amulets etc) carefully  aside in Hawke's mansion. Even if these weapons aren't the best available, the trade-off for fire protection makes a big difference . Just before going to the bone pit I load up my characters with runes of fire resistance.

2) stock up on health, stamina and mana potions

3) Use Aveline as a tank, keeping all the aggro directed to her - hex them and use AOE attacks when everything crowds around her (firestorm, tempest, rain of arrows etc.)

4) Spead out the characters so they don't all get simultaneously blasted by fireballs, but get them all to focus on  one enemy at a time so they go down quicker

5) When the two dragons appear, immobilise one of them (petrify, cone of cold, etc) and throw everything into the remaining one. Do the same for the second one.

6) On one occasion I had a harder ride than usual and returned to the entrance to the Bone Pit, which is a better defensive position because the opposition only comes from one direction

7) If I remember I use the Dog as well because he draws a lot of attention from the dragonlings
