I usually equip them with assault rifles or shotguns instead, so often that I don't even know how well squad members with sniper rifles work.  Heck, the only times I usually even notice that my squad members are shooting at the enemy is when they have a shotgun at arms length from the enemy.  Either way this has been my mentality for the last two games.  The way I see it is that it is high risk high reward and I would simply prefer my squad members do consistent damage when I'm not directing them to use their powers.  So am I missing out never equipping sniper rifles for anyone but myself?

Use Zaeed and Thane with that 3 shot burst sniper, it is glitched atm and they do crazy damage with it.

Garrus is a beast with a Sniper. Complement that with my close-range shotty Vanguard and pretty much anyone else = win.

Frankly I find Sniper squadmates do the most noticeable damage. When Legion headshots Harbinger with the Widow, trust me, you'll notice.

Plus they die less often. So Sniper squaddies > all, IMO.

I love sniper squaddies - Garrus, Thane, Legion. Legion in particular as he's awesome with the widow.

Sniping is good. Very good. And not just because it's stylish. I pretty much always have a sniper on my squad.

Anyway, as a general rule, the chattier your squadmates are, the more stuff they're killing. They each have a few lines they'll spout off when they make a kill. When Garrus, for example, goes "YESZ!" a la Captain Falcon or proclaims his love for his rifle, he just killed something.

Legion is incredible with the Widow - in terms of weapon damage, he's probably the best in the game. Thane is also pretty nifty, although I usually use him for Warp and Throw. I tend to leave Garrus with the Vindicator or the Geth Pulse Rifle, I don't feel I have enough assault rifle-ing squaddies.

I am told that legion is bizzarely innacurate when he is using the Widow. I almost never use him though so dont know.

I like Zaeed as my sniper, mostly because I find it hilarious when he tells himself that he saw him land that great shot

I pick squadmates pretty much exclusively for their powers/survivability and not their weapons. Miranda, Grunt and Jacob are my favorites. Don't really care which weapon they use, I never notice that part.

I think Zaeed sucks as a sniper. Garrus is great but he tends to fall too often. Thane would be my favorite sniper, along with Legion. But I generally use Thane as my sniper and sometimes Garrus or Legion.

Since I use Garrus 95% of the time I always make sure he has his sniper out. Does crazy amount of damage and as long as you position him right, he wont go down.

Why do people seem to think garrus is good, statistically Thane, Zaeed and Legion are all better, and there is no real difference in accuracy between them (IME, though have heard things about legion)

I suppose we would have to have a dev state definatively if one was more accurate than another.

Garrus is excellent for Area Overload, which the other snipers don't have. Obviously there are situations when the others would be better.

Legion with the widow is amazing. Also you notice when and what your squad is shooting at a lot more in ME2 than in ME1.

Garrus gets + 25 Power Damage. That means his Area Overload is as strong as Miranda's Heavy Overload and his Concussive Blast is as strong as Grunt's/Zaeed's Heavy Concussive Shot.

i use squadmates based purely on how much i like them, not on how good they are in combat lol.

but yeah i use garrus alot, and i tend to have him snipe mostly because 1.) it suits his character better. 2.) because he stays alive using it than an assault rifle.

Yeah while its dependant on the map whether they are useful or not, a sniper squaddie is a good way to round out your team.

Its just too bad you can't get the best one (IMO) until endgame. (At least not unless you care about a certain story event)

That sniper has the best mix of firepower, survivability, and AI. The only thing he is lacking is a defense buster, which he circumvents with pure firepower.

That is what I'm wondering while reading through this also.
Either way it appears I was wrong in my assumption, I'll give sniping a shot.

Don't forget their survivability. Garrus has the lowest health in the game.

It really irks me considering he is one of the few who actually wear armor.

you get miranda and jacob at the start i never really switch them you can beat the game easy with them besides by the time they get a shot off i've already killed half the enemy's onscreen with my soldier,battle rifle and Adrenaline.

You crazy.

Thane has what? Throw, warp and shredder ammo? Well that's 2 things imediately useless if you play on any difficulty above veteran. Garrus has overload which is much better, almost crucial to take at least 1 squadie with that on insanity (for most missions) and AP ammo is better than Shredder at the very least. 

All squad members have the same accuracy. This accuracy is also quite high so its always best to give them the fastest shooting weapon availible. (unless they are able to use Widow or Claymore) ie Geth Pulse rifle and Tempest SMG are the best choice for squad members even though the Mattock and Locust are statistically better for you to use. 

Just to reiterate, Thane is statistically one of the worst squad members. Zaeed and Legion are much better snipers, throw is useless, shredder ammo is useless and if you want warp, just take Miranda (the best squaddy btw)
