I've searched and searched but can't seem to find any info on this, so apologies in advance if it's been posted.

Do you earn friendship or rivalry points during dialogue with companions before they actually join your party? I read somewhere (thought it was the wiki) that stated your intial reaction to a character will impact where your friendship / rivalry starts but can't seem to find where I read it now that I'm actually looking for it.

Example: Long Way Home quest. I want Merrill as my romance option but I'm also trying to get my core group to +50 friendship as quickly as possible. When she uses blood magic to open the barrier, I don't see any reason to ****** off Anders and Aveline if taking Merrill's side isn't going to have any effect.

I tried it both ways and never saw a pop-up for Merrill either way, which isn't surprising given she's not actually in my party yet. Do things I say before she actually joins have any effect as to whether she starts off with a slight friendship or rivalry or will it always start as neutral regardless of my dialogue choices prior to her joining my party?

Thanks!  :)

I've done a couple play through's now and every time everyone started at neutral (50). I can do a couple of quickie tests but I'm pretty sure they always hit the party at 50.

Vhardamis - Thank you for your reply. I've been waiting to start playing again. I'm assuming that regardless, there will be plenty of chances to get her friendship up in the off chance it does have an effect. I just didn't want to take the rivalry hit with Aveline and Anders if it wasn't going to provide a boost to Merrill yet.

I'm pretty sure the friendship and rivalry points are at 0 when they join your party.
Except for Fenris if you're a mage, you seem to get + Rivalry as soon as he joins the party.

But from playing multiple times it does seem to be at 0.

Merrill's a special case, I think. The first conversation when you hit the alienage sets the path for her first part-of-the-party conversation, apparently, even if she doesn't show any immediate friendship or rivalry.
