We know that the purpose of the amulet delivered by Hawke to Merrill/Marethari was to resurrect Flemeth following her temporary demise at the hand of the Warden or Morrigan (hinted).

I just replayed the first scene at Sundermount and Hawke asks Marethari what she has to do with the amulet and why she needs to perform the ritual in the first place. Marethari says that just like Hawke, she is trying to clear a debt to Flemeth. There are no more mentions of what this debt is or why it must be cleared?

My personal theory is that Flemeth gave her the power to unbound the demon (for New Path).

I would guess that she enlisted Flemeth's help in protecting the tribe from something or other, perhaps aiding them in getting out of Ferelden ahead of the Blight (since Flemeth's dialog seems to imply that the tribe has already arrived in the Free Marches by the time of the sacking of Lothering). Flemeth, being the wheels-within-wheels "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside and enigma" type, probably foresaw how she could use this debt the tribe would owe her to assure her survival in case the Warden came knocking.

This, of course, relies on Flemeth being able to see the future or at least be an expert user of Xanatos Gambits (almost to the point of playing Xanatos Roulette), but that seems to be what the writers are going for with her.

Something to do with the mirror perhaps. Perhaps giving her the ability to contain the demon near the end of Merrils quest.

If you read The Stolen Throne, you learn Flemeth has Marethari's Clan capturing travellers through the Korcari Wilds and delivering them to her... for... reasons. I figure since the Wilds are so dangerous she was protecting them from the Orlesian Occupiers (since Orlesians aren't too particularly ... uhh... humane to Knife-Ears as the Fereldans.)

I prefer to think the debt is something absolutely ridiculous like Marethari promised to go halfsies on a book of spells but had already spent the cash on shoes.
Alas just another reason I need to read those novels.
