I always pick apart games to see their unholy guts. DA2 is just the latest to undergo such torture.

And if any game deserves to be picked apart, it's definitely this one.

I can think of at least 10 candiates more "deserving" of that honor.

Go ahead...?

Not unhealthy at all. Quite enjoyable, really. Much more fun to complain about DA2 than playing DA2.

For me, the saddest part of all is that DA 2 is the first Bioware game I uninstalled after barely 2 month of installing. I can't even finish my 2nd play-through. Not even NWN had this dubious honor. I simply want them to go back to doing what they do so very well. That's the only reason I keep criticizing it. I know the chances of that are slim. But hope dies last.

Well, that and because there are quite a few people here that make me laugh, think, and often wonder about ..... things.

Eh, I'll make a generalization and say that the people "ranting" or complaining about DA2 likely didn't just come into DA2 cold, they likely played Origins first and thus had some set of expectations based on Origins and past experiences with BioWare games. And its likely that DA2 failed to meet those expectations, thus the disappointment and urge to vent/rant/whatever on the forums.

Hanging around the forums may be just out of obsession or hatred for the game for some or its possible that some hold out some sliver of hope that the perceived shortcomings of DA2 can be acknowledged and fixed in the future, whether that's DLC or a sequel. I think many of the people that rant likely do so because they liked what Origins established to some extent and are upset at what DA2 did and thus hope to see whatever comes next as more in line with what they enjoyed out of Origins and not what they disliked about DA2, whatever that may be.

Basically, a good number of people aren't ranting out of pure hate or spite for Dragon Age overall, but are doing so because they actually like Dragon Age but didn't like DA2 and actually might have some interest in the future of Dragon Age as a franchise, but not necessarily if Dragon Age keeps on moving down the path DA2 established.

And this!^  I am not "ranting" because I hate the game. Far from it. Do I love DA2, no, it is meh with bits of pure fun.  But I do love DA the franchise, and BioWare.

I think there's a strong difference between rant and criticism. If one can make the distinction between the two well enough to make light of it and maintain a level head to not get personally overheated in pure anger, then I'd say, there's no harm.

If anything, I think it's therapeutic to see the silver lining and light humor in all of it.

Who knows, what if other companies were thinking of doing a 180? Perhaps it takes things like these to make other companies strive for what the fans want, as opposed to what they think we should want.

And I'd agree with eryn and Sab, the company does keep me coming back.

For those who may care, I REALLY apologize for yesterday. I'm much better now.

*ahem*

I can understand why someone is unhappy with a game, but I usually consider a rant as stating an opinion and, at the same time, assert that anyone disagreeing with it is an idiot. One common example:

"...DA:O was so incredibly deep and had so much amazing depth that deep within it's incredible depth was a level of holy greatness that DA2's not so deepness makes a mockery of. That's because EA forced Bioware to 'streamline' it, because EA doesn't care about the fans and only wants to make huge amounts of money selling games nobody wants!"

"Well, I wasn't a big fan of how DA:O tended to bog down on incredibly long quests, and the puzzles in the Fade made my head hurt. I LOVE the way DA2 moves along briskly and that the Fade is now a perfect replica of the Gallows!"

"That's 'cause DA2 was 'streamlined' for idiots like you who play games on consoles!"

A MILD exaggeration of what I've seen in these forums. I understand the first character's frustration, but feel that the second character should be able to disagree without being insulted no matter how silly s/he may sound defending it.

Yeah, I don't go with that ****e. I call them on it. And I HATE when people call someone a name, ie: fanbois (sets my teeth on edge) console kiddie, PC elitetist, rose glasses wearign, blah blah blah.

But I don't have to call on trolls to go to their bridges as often as I used to. What we all do here isn't ranting as far as I'm concerned.

@ Sabriana -- Don't you play any of the community modules for NWN? Some of them are VERY good, and easily better than the base game.

Agrees with Ery, Fight, Ali, and Abispa

There are those who love the game. I hate it when they are called names. There are those who think the game is "meh". I hate it when we are called silly names.

There are those who dislike the game. I hate it when they are called names. It's their right. We, as players, *feel* games. If it doesn't feel right it simply fails. If it does, it succeeds.

What irks me the most is being lumped in with those who rant and rave about DA 2. I don't do that. I, personally, think the game is average, and in league with all the average hybrids out here that are a dime a dozen. I have always listed why I find the game lacking without resorting to insult other people's tastes or their choice of platforms. There are people who love DA 2 who have done the same in reverse.

For me, it boils down to this. Would I again pay 56 euros for DA 2? Hell no!

Would I pay 80+ euros for a game that follows the rules, background, lore, and dev devotion that DA:O had? Hell yes!

Edited to answer Abispa

Yes, I do love some of the PW of NWN. The difference is that those players are not the usual MMO players. Well, usually. But luckily, you can pick and choose. And in the end, get to know the players, which is important to me.

I just don't think we needed 100 constructive criticism threads.

I think it depends. having a large thread to collect it all is good, especially for BioWare to go through it, but it doesn't make a good place for debating the points, too much going on in one place means other things get lost and drowned out. having seperate threads for different discussions makes it much easier than having a dozen overlapping conversations

Yeah, that is true indeed, although how different the discussions in the other threads are, I don't know.

Perhaps I'm just different in the sense that I would never want to spend two months talking about something I didn't enjoy. I get it that some want to influence how DA3 turns out (and I hardly think it'll make a difference), but really, in the two months that have passed since release pretty much every topic has been covered to death so I don't really see the point of going on. Which is why I won't bother posting in the general discussion section anymore (at least the negative threads), I'm bored of it.

This, although I don't consdier DA2 a "hybrid" it's more of the New Sub Genre of RPGs that Bioware has created with Mass Effect 2.  I don't have a name for the sub genre yet, but it is basically a RPG heavy on cutscenes with trope cliche characters that are romance options, multiple instances of the illusion of choice (choose your own ADVENTAH!) and stipped down (streamlined/AWESOME BUTTON) game mechanics and party management, where combat is usually borrowed from another genre.

@Hexpane...I think Ali came up with it RWG  Role Watching Game.  I call it ME in medieval drag. And it was meh, though playable (mage my fav and my least fav--plot holes).  And for many it is not only playable, but re-playable, which is just lovely.

Oh Zjarcal and her pony! She will hug you to deah! Watch out!  She did it to me....it was sooo oohh and ARRRGGGHHH. What...why are you all staring at me like that? I got better! :D

I've seen some of the same faces here for two months complaining about DA2.
I'm fairly sure it's unhealthy to constantly talk about something you claim to despise. If not for your personality at least stop it for your completion, ranting on a computer for long periods of time turns you into Pizza The Hut.

I have argued that if all the background characters have voices, especially if they're well done, the main character should have one too. I actually like both of Hawke's VAs, but I wonder if Bioware and EA are painting themselves into a corner by become more reliant on VAs and dramatic cinema scenes.

As VA becomes more prevalent, I really hope that EA/Bioware doesn't keep trying to hire big name actors to play the roles. I'm not saying that they do a bad job, but there are hundreds of VA from animation and commercial narration that specialize in conveying emotion without being on camera themselves. I ASSUME that such an actor would be less costly to hire than a big name pulled from well known science fiction roles and need-not diminish quality. Do we really need a "star" to play Flemeth, Lady Benezia, or that stupid "Klingon-sounding" Krogan who's name I forgot.

Yes, I love Flemeth's voice, but I worry about the cost of hiring the former Starfleet captain, and whether or not "stars" are willing to do all the subtle, incidental, silly, embarrassing, and stupid lines necessary to give players the multitude of choices they desire.

I think that, along with the "streamlined" controls are the reason that "old-school" RPGs are disappearing.

My opinion, a "streamlined" cinema style game can still be amazing and fun to play (and that's pretty much what I was hoping for when I bought DA2), but I don't blame that goal for DA2's many flaws. I'd love to play an "old-school" style RPG, though, but for the maximum number of desired choices ALL dramatic VA should be removed. Even the DA:O choices were limited to have all characters, sexes and races have essentially the same adventure.

Don't worry I treat the blind idiots who think the game is perfect just the same.
Only problem is that most of them are too busy playing the game to go about praising every aspect of it on the forums. That leaves the people who stick around complaining like an in-law.
