As a novice writer myself, it is ALWAYS the responsibility of the writer to make the audience care about their characters. If you're not able to write a story and develop characters within that story in such a way that captivates the imagination of those reading, then you failed... end of story, so to speak.
An awesome button and a writer too? I really am in love. Fanfic? I am a writer and I am writing some fanfic to keep my writing skills up while working on an original idea. PM me your stuff (if you have any fanfic?)?
And, yes it is up to us writers to give our readers a reason to care about the characters and to keep up with what has gone before, and make things fit logically into the story (ie close those plot holes!).

You're right, I'm sorry. Your emotional impotence is obviously David Gaider's fault, that fiend in human shape who eats broken bottles and sacrifices small animals at the time of the full moon.
Again your put downs and arrogance are par for the course. A bridge calls, and it calls for you! Quick, best get to it or the billy goats may get across!
You know, it's sad. Sometimes you sound intelligent, until you start with the derisive attitude. It would be fun to read and discuss with you but I don' t talk to trolls.

No it's just his jo to give the story something that remotely resembles emotion. Have a squencince that playes out like this "something bad happens to a person the player cares about. and before we can let that sink in there is a 3 year time jump and after that it's not really talked about again" is not going to get anyone emotionly invested. something along the lines of (spoiler for FF9) " And then the girls mom dies, she is so devestated by this that she stops talking to everyone(hell it even affect her abiulity to concentrate in actauly battles), and right when the player is starting to think of it of less sad and more annoying she starts to get better". Thats how emotional involment is games should be done, and the sad part is there were some parts in the game that got close to being damn good at it, like some of the romances. But in the places there should have been some deep feelings or remorce/sadness/hatred there was nothing, and even the NPCs mostly dont care after one or two scenes.

DA2 left me with little opportunity to be emotionally invested. Even the romances were shallow, my friendships too due to lack of contact save for mini or main character quests. Meeting my family on the run in the middle of fleeing and battles with no context of our past together...yeah. It fell flat. I may have only met my mother in the Noble's origin, or my cousin and other fellow CE's, or my childhood friend and fellow clans folk for a brief moment in DAO, but it was in the home, or camp, so it made it really stick for so short a time. Running in the heat of battle did not make me feel connected.

As far as I know I don't think I have come across as a ranter. I know what ever I post could be picked a part and people may or may not agree with what I say. But thats why people have opinions, and why we are entitled to them. Its like advice, you can give it to anyone you want, but after that it is up to those that the advice was given to to do with it as they please.
Like I said in another thread, I have my gripes, I just need to work through them if I can. I am hoping that BW does better with DA3, I even am hoping ME3 is going to be worth it. But I'll have to wait and see.

You seem to have a definition of what trolling is that's drastically different from the one I've got, which is fine. Or perhaps you're keen to see trolls behind every bush so you can whip out that colourful fairy tale bridge reply that you've honoured me with twice now.
As for your accusations of derision and arrogance, I would argue that it's more an attempt at savoir faire. Yes, it's highly unfashionable these days, where everyone's opinion, no matter how ass backwards, is taken as equally valid. Possibly it's my own misjudgement in trying to proselytize to an unreceptive audience. And your smug and permissive attitude toward intractable barbarians is right up there with my own pet peeves, so a merry "I don't talk to [x]" right back at ya. Wasn't meant to be, alas.
OP, please accept my apologies for cluttering your thread with off topic posts whether directly or indirectly. That will come to an end. Dubya, I hear ya. Taking the writer's part against the outraged mob has been my own unhealthy obsession since the release of DA2. And now, back to work.

All I seem to do is complain, and it seems to be unhealthy. I never thought I would be this distraught over a video game. I mean I was upset when Final Fantasy was taken over and hijacked and now its **** but that’s a different story.
I preordered DA II months in advance based on the strength of the Bioware name and I was expecting more of DA I with a VA and dialogue wheel. What I got, well....not what I paid for.
Anyone who has had an early failed relationship would likely feel the same way I do. I preordered / Got involved / got married for this ? What happened to the game / man / woman I fell in love with in the first place? We need to spend time apart / get divorced. You are just not the same game / man / woman I knew before.
Then there is all the awkward encounters with mutual friends.

Which means I am no longer playing offline games, which means, I can get back to playing the best RPG of 2011... DC Universe Online!
Which also means I will no longer be playing any DA2, which means I will no longer be ranting about things I dislike about it and instead can just play my DCUO and wait for new content!
Sorry I said bad things about you DA2, now that I have my DCUO back, I really look at DA2 like an ex girlfriend from college that I can't even remember what her last name was.
I guess we had a few good times? I dunno, most of it is washed over by much better relationships, sorry, but I bet DA2 feels the same way about me.

Why the full moon? When does the new moon get some love? You'd think that the greater darkness of a night without the moon's glow would be much more ominous than a big, bright full moon.

I'm new to the forums, but not new to DA:O or DA2. Someone mentioned the developers seem to be taking note/listening to our complaints; can someone point me to a thread where the developers respond? How do I recognize a dev on these forums? DA2 seems like so many sequels where it adds some good things, and takes away some good things, and I'm left frustrated when I play it. I just end up wishing we had a mixture of Origins and DA2, to get the best of both worlds.
Best bet is to put your critique and your review on the official constructive criticism and the offical review threads.

Devs have Bioware above their icon, and threads which have a dev response have a Bioware below the thread title in the thread index. Click on the Bioware in the index and you will get just the original post plus the dev responses.cheshire137 wrote...

A lot of you younger gamers just better realize how good you have it. I remember the gaming dark ages of the mid 90's (where FMV "Multimedia Explosion" was all the rage) and there was hardly a decent game to be found. Police Quest: SWAT, to this day, is the only game I ever sent back to the manufacturer (complete with a nerd rage letter) for a full refund. To Sierra's credit, they sent me a check 2 weeks later with a letter of apology. Compared to that level of craptitude, Dragon Age 2 is the gaming equivalent of War & Peace.

Don't mind Woofy... he's trying to make sure he uses each word that comes up on his "word a day" calendar. He paid full price for it, even though it got bad reviews and the price was reduced a month later.

Oh damn, Zing!
Ohhh snap! And on that note...apparently the word a day calendar was not ambitious.
Now, while I don't think the story idea(s) were ambitious...I see their potential. Three great story possibilities... Weird, creepy thaig pointing us towards dwarves that did use magic. Quanari invasion of Thedas once again. And the mage templar ho-down. All three of those make me hunger for more on those story ideas.
As a wanna-be writer, I just know these are living and breathing on someone's computer, or at the very least, in their heads. Oh, how I long to talk to the writers unifficially. I know that it is just some fantastic, juicy, story telling right there. Because, lets face it, BioWare does have some amazing talent working for them. Rushed or no.

Glad you mentioned that ancient thaig! I remember when I did my first playthrough, that part really did grab my interest... unfortunately, it was just used as a one-dimensional plot locale to push the idol into the storyline. I wanted to know more about it, wanted to explore it more, find out what those ancient dwarves were doing.
But instead... we got what was apparently a lyrium idol that was actually a reaper indoctrination device that allowed Harbinger to assume direct control over Meredith in Act 3.

I think they did say they brought in things from Mass Effect into dragon age! Didn't think it be quite that much!
