It could have been something sneaky, but I'm betting they just forgot there was a Kahlee Sanders. The dev team doesn't write those books, and Drew moved to Texas.

Because two characters with the same last HAVE to be closely related, just like in real life, everyone with the same last name as me is either my brother or cousin or something similar.  :innocent:

I don't think anyone means that, it's just that this new James character is going to be playing a relatively important role in a fictitious universe, and given the large amount of names possible to use, why originally pick Sanders when you already have a canon character by that name?

Seems a little bit like the "...geth companion named Legion..." - "No, he just stalks Shepard throughout the game!" thing they had going on in 2009. Mark my words, James will turn out to have been a Sanders all along.

Like Terror mention earlier, Vega is no new name. It's the name of one of the brightest stars in the sky, which we've known of since before recorded history. More info below:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vega

I'm convinced this is the reference.

It's also the second brightest star after Arcturus in the northern celestial hemisphere. And since James probably haven't ventured out that much in the galaxy, I'd guess he's located somewhere in the Arcturus system.

But how many people have last name Vega with a british accent?

How many people are named Vega in general?

Like I said really odd surname...  Thats why I still hope its a WIP still

It's a common Spanish/Latin surname.  At least in places like New York and Miami.

The Vega system was also the site of a decisive battle against the alien kilrathi in the old Wing Commander series. It was one of the war's "closing doors" that humanity had to slip through in order to survive - if Vega had been lost, we'd all be speaking kilrathi by now, and eating our meals off of bowls on the floor. Damn furballs.

From a realism standpoint you're correct.  My maiden name was Cook, after all, and I got really tired of people asking "are you related to so and so?"  From a writing standpoint, however, I can see why the writing staff wouldn't want to confuse things.  So, you change the name, to make sure people are thinking about your story and not the commonality of particular surnames in the 22nd century.

I wonder why changing the surname is important and necessary.

James Vega...? Should mix more spanish in there, like Antonio Vega.

Since humanity is more multicultural than ever in ME, we might as well see some other nationalities plus accents. Is it just me, or were there more people of different cultures/accents in ME1 compared to the Canadian/American/British of ME2?

Most likely changed it to avoid confusion with Kahlee Sanders from the books.

"James Vega", huh? Sounds kinda weird to me. With that first name, I mean. Ah well. Maybe it'll grow on me or something.

D: same here.

James Vega... I'm guessing he's overly muscular and has giant metal wolverine claws and wears a mask? Hmm.
