Fenris...yeah he definitely should've been harder to romance as a mage, male or female.

I believe that the bisexuality of the companions is to allow those characters to be available as love interests for however you play Hawke. It's to allow a bit of fairness with the romance options. Guys and girls alike can woo Isabela, guys and girls alike can woo Fenris, etc.
But doesn't that alienate the Straight gamer crowd?
I know everyone want equal choice and options but I don't think straight gamers who want a Bi option should speak for the GLBT crowd, you can't not know what a gay person want or feel. It's like asking a man what does child birth feels. You can't.
Why is it that my husband can play this game....turn down Anders, accept the rivalry points and NOT be by bothered by it while others get in a freaking frenzy over it???
Its a FREAKING GAME!
If you play it ***right***...you avoid romancing the characters you DO NOT FEEL Comfortable romancing.
I am a straight gamer and IT DOES NOT offend me or alienate me. It did NOT alienate my husband but then again we are secure with who we are that we don't let those things get to us.
Just FYI, logic, reason, and tolerance have been known to alienate the "straight gamer crowd". This group should not be confused with gamers who happen to be straight.

Couldn't rename it then in that case, could you? Being a straight person who plays games but advocates bisexuality, it feels a bit like friendly fire.Siansonea II wrote...

I think that as long as you can get by without being sexually harassed (eg: like Anders did to Velanna in Awakenings) the old adage applies - as long as it is well done, extra choice is almost always a good thing in RPGs.

Exactly.
The game doesn't force anyone into any relationship, you're perfectly free to turn them down. Is it that men are bothered by getting the rivalry points for turning down Anders? Bah, haven't people ever seen someone get offended at being turned down? It's a character quirk, it's not a big deal at all.
And if it's the sheer thought of being hit on by a man that bothers some, well, Yahtzee said it best: "Are there men so insecure that they're offended by fictional gay men coming onto their fictional avatars?"
But as was said before, logic and good reasoning aren't exactly rampant in these forums.

It's worse than a friendly fire. A generalization silly and irrelevant.

THis is getting to be RE gad dang DICULOUS!
I'm not Bi, but I really don't care who is. Make the characters INTERESTING AND LIKABLE first. No one in DA2 is even remotely likable, worst of all "The Champion Hawke" is an absolute turd of a character design.
EA Bioware went for the Twilight fan club, and that's not me.

Rules the same for everyone and all that.

I didn't name them, they named themselves. Ironically, I imagine many of them actually aren't all that straight when it comes right down to it. After all, I think much of this antagonism falls under the 'doth protest too much' phenomenon. I've known many a LGBT person who was virulently homophobic before they finally accepted that aspect of themselves. Most actual straight people have reactions along the lines of 'whatever, doesn't affect me'.

I don't agree with the OP, but not everyone recoils at flirtation from someone they are really not into because they're just so goshdarn far in the closet:P

Really, would you like to do a compare/contrast of Twilight romances compared to the ones in DA2? It would be quite illuminating.

Sure, but once again, the game doesn't force you to accept. In fact the game gives you the chance to voice that displeasure right from the start, essentially reinforcing your notion that everyone has the right to dislike that.

Do you know, I think you might just have hit on the least interesting idea in the entirety of time and space.
I hope nobody takes you up on that, because I may actually bleed through my eyesockets though the boredom of trying to read it, if they do.

Agreed,
my personal thought is that as long as the game doesn't become a
vehicle for unwanted, suspension-breaking flirtation, then the extra
choice is awesome - including.. no especially extra choice I don't think I'll normally want.

I would agree with this. I think it is mainly a cultural thing though, and seeing how afraid many people are of being taken for gay, any portrayal of homosexual relationships as normal and acceptable is welcome, if it helps to alleviate this problem.
Personally I liken your impulse of revulsion to common phobias. They are more frequent than one would think. A friend of mine for example goes 'ewww' every time she sees a spider and has mild panic attacks when she has to speak in front of more than 3 people. This is of course in no way a healthy reaction, because most spiders are completely harmless, and an audience is unlikely to do worse than ignoring your speech, but fear or disgust aren't necessarily rational.
On the other hand, her job and the circumstances of her life don't demand that she holds lectures, and she can get rid of spiders with a broom just fine. From this there is no need for her to get therapy for those minor problems. Similarly, as long as your impulse of revulsion isn't in any way debilitating for you, and doesn't negatively affect other peoples quality of life, I see no problem with it.
Should it do either, you might consider desensitization somewhere in the future.

Because neither of you have even touched Twilight, you just picked up on something Gaider said once and twisted it to fuel your petty hate machine.
