PC specs

i7 920 @4ghz stable
gtx470's sli (tried at both stock and overclocked settings)


right after the firefight where you kill the clan chief guy and his minons on the mordin loyalty mission,
walk up the stairs to the door that leads to the lab place

I can send my squad members in no problem, but once I set foot inside, a few steps later
the game automatically locks up and I have to use task manager to force the process to end.

I've shut down various background programs that might cause conflict (fraps etc)

no difference.
All overclocks are stable. I rolled back to stock clocks as well, but still nothing.
Patched to the latest 1.02 patch.

should I try a disinstall and re-install? that'll be a pain as that'll take like half a day and I'm hoping to avoid that :/

Sorry, I don't see any red flags among what you have reported, but perhaps if you completed the entire suggested report form procedure, someone here may spot something.

1. What is the nature of the problem you are seeing?
     Freezing/game locking up after going into the lab after killing the chief. I can order squad mates in no problem, but once I take a few steps in the game locks up.
2. When did the problem start occurring?
    Just started this mission. Haven't tried this mission before. 
3. Where does your problem occur?
      on the Mordin Loyalty Mission. Right after the dialouge with the chief and the firefight, and entering the lab.
4. What are the steps in replicating the problem?
      Just entering the lab. Walking into the lab will just lock/freeze the game for me
5. Have you modified your game in any way?
      No
I haven't played ME1. This is my first time through ME2.

basically you walk into the area and a cutscene fires with a discussion with Mordin's student. The fact that it happens at the exact same location to me says the program is looking for a file it can't find. Now this could be a DirectX9.0c file if you didn't install it during ME2 installation, or a corrupted file in the ME2 installation. Now this may not be the case because there is a bunch going on when playing a game, but I would try a DirectX9.0c reinstall and then a ME2 reinstall to see if it is fixed. If you are using a downloaded version, then I would also try redownloading the files rather than installing from the one you already have, if you are using disc version then just do normal reinstall.

right heres what I did to solve the problem

disinstalled ME2
reinstalled/donwloaded from EADM
installed 1.02 patch
rolled back to 266.58 drivers for my 470's

and now the game magically doesn't freeze
:DD time to continue my missions!
