70+ hours in one week . . . I'm hardcore but I've never been THAT addicted. DAO was 100 hours, but it took me 5 weeks to complete the first time. I love DAO as I've played through over 15 times since I got it as a gift.
I honestly thought DA2 was a better game across the board than DAO.
The combat was better - I liked the "awesome" effects even though I played on PC. I needed to play on PC as I only have one hand. So pausing to direct the action is a must. But the speed, flashy moves and big booms were great.
I liked the skills and skill trees. Gave characters more flexibility in roles. I LOVED the Specialist skills.
The secondary quests and companion quests tied in beautifully with the main quests to create a great story.
I liked the characters. I got to know each one enough to like them without getting forced hour long conversations with them. Even many of the non-party secondary characters were great and part of the entire story.
There were choices. I don't know what people are complaining about saying there were no choices. I won't spoil anything, but there were some heavy moments.
I was not bored with the map thing everyone complains about because the story was immersive enough that it didn't matter. Same thing with the way the mobs engaged the party.
It was just a better GAME IMO. GAME being the operative word. I don't know how else to describe it.
I'm not trolling, but flame away.

But yes, it does have a lot of good developments. I actually liked the combat mechanics - it was just the battle design I didn't care for. I also liked the voiced protagonist and being in Kirkwall (a couple of things some people didn't care for).
I think what made it more compulsive was the smaller quests. In Origins, when you're doing the Fade or the Deep Roads, you're stuck in that area for a long time (and god, the Deep Roads were so long and brown...) Being based in Kirkwall, you have the choice of a lot of different quests. Maybe you have an hour or two to play - you can easily get a few things done and feel like you've had a good session. It's like the difference between books with long or short chapters - I tend to race through the former more quickly because I always think "ooh I can read another chapter before my tube stop."
I wouldn't say it's a better game, but it does have some improvements over Origins and is overall enjoyable. YMMV.

I did end up liking a lot of the companions more than I expected. Varric, Aveline, Fenris, Isabela, and the twins, I thought turned out quite well.

I loved it, too. It has its flaws, but then so does every game. It may be in vogue to trash it (and hey, everyone's entitled to their opinion), but kudos for having the stones to post a topic in support of it, OP.
You know, as a detractor I find that more than a little presumptuous. God forbid my opinion actually be composed of valid complaints. Nope, I must be ragging on DA2 just because it's the cool thing to do.

Glad you (and those others who did) enjoyed it.
I wrote a very constructive review and sent PMs to Bioware employees on the forum to ask them to read my review because I wanted to contribute. Never got a PM answer or a Bioware reply in the thread. I wonder what would have happened if my review was extremely positive instead of being medium-negative but constructive...

Are they even paying attention to that thread any more?

They both had their pluses and minuses....now if they could combine the pluses from both games for the next game(s)....that would be great.
Hubby and I had a discussion over lunch re: the direction of the series....and we're both hoping for at least two or three more DA titles.....there's just so much to do and so many other contries to throw into chaos!

I am NOT about to take out my dislike on anyone else, though! I'm happy that some people liked it, because I have always been a crazy BioWare fangirl and I don't want them to go down in flames, or anything like that. I won't go into my feelings for DA2 here (this is a thread for happy people!), I'll just say that I hope future installments of DA are more enjoyable for all of us, and less... viciously dividing than DA2 has been.
Happy people should give their criticism just as much as unhappy people should. BioWare needs to see the bad and the good, to figure out what to do next!
