I have really enjoyed my Hawkes =) being able to use a voice and so forth. Hubby as well, we have had friends over for dinner and the conversation turned to DA2 and how we played our Hawkes. It's good to have friends that you can talk to about your fav-games =)

Playing on PS3 it was an improvement in graphics and smoothness. Even the sparse interface grew on me.
I liked all of the areas you could go to, but it felt really small. I think the illusion of the country map in DA:O made you feel like you were in a big area, traveling on an epic adventure, though in reality the areas weren't much bigger once you got there. So, it just didn't feel like I went anywhere because...I really didn't. The Deep Roads expidition was the only time I felt like I was on an adventure, the rest kind of felt like errand running - though with some nice things throughout. Just felt like I was going over the same areas again and again, and while nice looking, were also a bit bland at the same time.
Some of the story points with your family were pretty good I thought and left my mouth open a few times....but, I wish some of the companion stuff could have been like that. I will say, much to my embarassment, I played actII twice because I somehow messed up the romance with Isabella
Fun diversion, but DA:O felt much more epic.

It has a lot of flaws - some inexplicable character decisions (particularly in Chapter 3), the endless waves of squishy enemies (not to mention ninjas dropping from the sky), regurgitated maps and so forth. And yes there are choices but they lead to pretty much the same results, no matter what you do. These seem to be the things people are most upset about.
But yes, it does have a lot of good developments. I actually liked the combat mechanics - it was just the battle design I didn't care for. I also liked the voiced protagonist and being in Kirkwall (a couple of things some people didn't care for).
I think what made it more compulsive was the smaller quests. In Origins, when you're doing the Fade or the Deep Roads, you're stuck in that area for a long time (and god, the Deep Roads were so long and brown...) Being based in Kirkwall, you have the choice of a lot of different quests. Maybe you have an hour or two to play - you can easily get a few things done and feel like you've had a good session. It's like the difference between books with long or short chapters - I tend to race through the former more quickly because I always think "ooh I can read another chapter before my tube stop."
I wouldn't say it's a better game, but it does have some improvements over Origins and is overall enjoyable. YMMV.
I feel the same exact way about the game. I think it has some improvements over Origins but some things were worse but overall it's just a tad worse than Origins.

I love DA2 to bits but I agree on wanting to see a few more areas. Let's hope that we will get to do that in the dlc. I can see that they don't want us to know what goes on outside of Kirkwall during these years. Perhaps that is what we will find out during DA3? But I am starting to feel a bit cooped up in Kirkwall, as great as that city is. Haven't romanced Izzy yet but hubby loved her romance-arc. Have fun on the forum and play well

I feel that very little was done wrong about DA 2 save the small nitpicks about the enviroment flexibility and mob encounters. The story was like any other bioware game ive played, the core reason I played it, I was not dissapointed.
Bioware wanted to create a franchise that made itself stand out as a Dark-Fantasy. Id say Origins actually failed to do this because Origins had far too many methods in Which the Warden could achieve absoleute "happy end" scenerios. In Origins the greatest dissapointment was the fact that being evil had to be a consious choice rather than something that should have been part of the franchise from launch.
Now Hawkes story definatley hit this mark perfectly, players were given choices that had definate impactful consequences and that is what Dark Fantasy should be about, consequence. Dark Fantasy is very little different from a horror film with the only exception being that your the one making consious choices about who dies and why.
Hawkes story really completed the feeling of that dark, grim world that Dragon Age 2 is set in, and the fact that the horrors of the blight were nothing in comparison to the greater evils that roam in the hearts of all mortal kind, man, elf, dwarf, qunari, or any other race we have yet to see in the franchises growing world.
It goes to show you that evil really is a subjective word and in a world where evils are thriving and growing everywhere, your decision is less about saving it and more about being apart of the world everyone in this setting is used to, choosing the lesser evil over the greater good.
And that is what Dark Fantasy "should" be about, that is what makes Dragon Age 2 Successful, the impact of your consequences are much deeper and thus, you have to be very careful what you decide to do and who you decide to help.

But the real reason that bothers me is that those people are active trying to ruin the game and keep other people from playing it. I ask a friend who never played either DA games if he wanted to check them out, but he doesn't want to because the user comments are so negative.

The companions, dialogue system, friendship/rivalry and faster combat were great improvements over Origins.
My only real complaint is the recycled ares, weaker story in act 3 after the awesome Qunari quests in act 2, and overuse of waves in combat (at least don't have them dropping out of the sky please).
Looking forward to future DLC and DA3.

To me the most important thing is the way the gameplay feels and I think DA2 hit the spot there. I like the flashier look. You can't claim that the combat system is less realistic when you are talking about a game where people cast "magic spells". It's just a video game not a real life combat simulator.
The ninjas dropping from the sky was a bit off but at least it kept the pace of combat from getting too slow. As long as you are keeping track of your people it shouldn't be an issue. Nothing you can't get used to after playing through a few quests.
I like the abilites alot better. In DAO many of the talents and spells felt useless or burried. Even though some abilites(like Haste) are bugged, for the most part they seem to work alot better and they feel more responsive. I like the CCC system and it makes a world of difference on the higher difficulties.
I'm slightly undecided on how I feel about the quests. For the most part they were ok. I feel the rewards for some of them could have been better. While some quests had their own good stories and some tied in well with the main story, others didn't seem to mesh well with the overall narrative.
Even the main story itself had some minor inconsistencies.
I wish the Act 2 and Act 3 conclusion quests would have been as grand as the Act 1 conclusion quest. They felt a bit empty and short compared to Act 1. I think this is a spoiler free forum so I won't go into details.
I think for me DAO was like that first love and DA2 was like that new kid on the block. So like most people I tended to be a bit judgemental towards it in the beginning, magnifying all its "flaws". While I sympathize with the DAO "purists" I'm not going to let the opinions of others determine wether or not I like a game.
I even went for a nostalgic playthrough on Origins but it just did not feel same. Inferno wasn't as cool looking or as satisfying as Firestorm. I do miss Mana Clash though but the staff combat in Origins doesn't compare to the one in DA2 and the staves look more sophisticated. As Sandal would say "Boooom". For the Maker's sake give the boy some pie!

70+ hours in one week . . . I'm hardcore but I've never been THAT addicted. DAO was 100 hours, but it took me 5 weeks to complete the first time. I love DAO as I've played through over 15 times since I got it as a gift.
I honestly thought DA2 was a better game across the board than DAO.
The combat was better - I liked the "awesome" effects even though I played on PC. I needed to play on PC as I only have one hand. So pausing to direct the action is a must. But the speed, flashy moves and big booms were great.
I liked the skills and skill trees. Gave characters more flexibility in roles. I LOVED the Specialist skills.
The secondary quests and companion quests tied in beautifully with the main quests to create a great story.
I liked the characters. I got to know each one enough to like them without getting forced hour long conversations with them. Even many of the non-party secondary characters were great and part of the entire story.
There were choices. I don't know what people are complaining about saying there were no choices. I won't spoil anything, but there were some heavy moments.
I was not bored with the map thing everyone complains about because the story was immersive enough that it didn't matter. Same thing with the way the mobs engaged the party.
It was just a better GAME IMO. GAME being the operative word. I don't know how else to describe it.
I'm not trolling, but flame away.

Well everybody knows about the various Cutlass Jacks/Maria Calibans/Phones. When Gaider says 'suck it up, princess', a normal response in this case would come as 'Please sir, may I have some more?'

Mr Jabba, think you should hire your own Boba Fett and hunt down all those that liked this game... I mean no one should challenge the Hutts nor dare to think differently! Care for some speed racing afterwards, you bring your venom and I'll bring few Twi'lek chicks. Dealio?

I just finished my first run through of Nehrim this week end, and can with all certainty say this free player-made mod beats DAII... of course I'd also rate Nehrim higher than the original Oblivion campaign too but that's besides the point... Bioware should be able to out do a team of modders what with their pad professionals and all, yet some how they failed with DAII.
DAII wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't up to the benchmark set by DAO or Bioware's previous works.
It's not a fair comparison: Dragon Age 2 had a smaller budget. Mike Laidlaw spent most of the project's funds on priceless porcelain figurines, frog mariachis, and a bridge in Montana. He loves his mariachis.

I thought i would just point out this seems to be a much more powerful response because of your statement that you only had one hand! I can not begin to imagine the increased difficulty of the game for you with regards to play style. If you liked it being at a disadvantage over most player I would say that speaks alot for the game.Hanz54321 wrote...
