Ok, I just entered act 3 and in this playthrough I am in a relationship with merril (if that is relevant to this) and in my quest list for companions I have two quests for her. The first quest for her is called "A talking to" and the other "The new place".

With A talking to being first in the list I went straight to Merrils house to do the quest. When I enter her house with a party of 4 (Merril, Anders, Aveline and me) Varric appears at the door also and Merril randomly says her usual line when she's in a dark cave like dungeon "It's all cold on my feet" or whatever. Varric stays randomly stood at the door to the house not moving and Merril just repeats the same line over and over when ever I talk to her. There's no way to enter a dialogue with her to start the quest. I abandoned my whole party and so that Merril would be in the house alone with me. This got rid of Varric at the door and Merril was now standing near the table in the first room but still no luck and she still repeats the same old stuff.

I tried reloading from the start of act 3 again and still no luck, the same thing happens.

Has anyone else encountered this? I'm aware some encounter a little different bug where she's instead crying in front of the mirror. Is there a fix for this or am I never going to be able to do this quest?

I'm growing tired with how bugged this game is...

Ok, I found a work around for it. I went to my own home first to do the other quest for Merril, then I went to her house. That seemed to introduce a cutscene between Merril and Varric which explains why he was bugged at the door previously.
