This is EVIL! Though, I think siding with Meredith in the first place is evil.
Haters gonna hate.

Why?
Seriously, no hate this time.
What character depth does she have?
Isn't she just another *Cutie*?

She's not just a cutie, though that is one of her greatest character traits.
She is the smartest mage we've actually met, aside from Flemeth and Morrigan. Marethari thought she knew more about an Eluvian than Merrill did, when Marethari never researched it at all.
She knows that all spirits are dangerous, something that Anders failed to realize because of his Andrastian faith.
If she's kidnapped by Grace she tells you that the only thing she couldn't live without is Hawke. That shows that the mirror isn't what matters most to her.
She's smart, funny, cute, and many other things. There is character depth to her.

How do you know that Marethari havn't researched Eluvians? She is a Keeper, she most likely have studied them. Marethari at elast knew that the demon inside was playing Merrill, something Merrill neglected, or didn't care about, as long as the mirror was restored.
On a side note: There certainly is character depth to her. Alot actually. I just don't like her.

Gee I don't know maybe the fact that Marethari said she wants nothing to do with it?
#107
Posté 20 mai 2011 - 12:32
Indeed. She wants nothing to do with it. Ie. that Eluvian in particular. It had already cost her two of her clan, she knew the mirror was corrupted, and best left forgotten, Merrill on the other hand was convinced it contained some sort of hidden knowledge, and would pay any price for it.The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...

Marethari has also said that the Eluvians were best left to a forgotten time.

And that implies she knows what they are, if she knows they are best left forgotten. The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...

Um... no it doesn't. It implies she's basing that off of what happened in the Dalish Origin. She knows nothing about them.

Posté 20 mai 2011 - 03:44
Indeed. In the Dalish origin, she initially wants to study it, but changes her mind after Duncan tells her about the corruption within.
She only arrives in Kirkwall maybe a few months after that. Merrill studied it for over a decade. I think only Morrigan may know more about Eluvians than Merrill because Morrigan got hers working. But Merrill is one of the world's greatest authorities on Eluvians. Merethari never approached the thing.

I think Morrigan and Merrill may be equals at the very least. Morrigan was using an already complete, already untainted mirror. Merrill built one from scratch, and may one day get it to work.

Posté 20 mai 2011 - 04:11
That's true. I'm just basing my opinion on the fact that at the beginning of Act 3, Merrill had finished piecing together the mirror but didn't know what to do after. That's why she had to go back to the demon on Sundermount.

I wonder if maybe Morrigan left clues as to what to do for an Eluvian to get it working....

Personally I don't see Morrigan as the type. Any source of power, she'd likely keep for herself...or the warden if romanced.
#116
Posté 20 mai 2011 - 04:33
If the Warden was Dalish I could see her leaving behind clues. I don't know though, Morrigan might've taken notes in that book she borrowed (or stole. whatever strikes your fancy) from Ariane's clan.
considering she didn't take it with her, I think she might've.

Morrigan is wicked. Merrill is kind. Nothing else matters. It's just a game, that's why she's so funny when she steps in ****. (Merrill.)

well i think the clan and maybe Marethari have a right to be scared, upset at Merill for what she wants to do....they don't know about the ELuvian like us players do...sorry to say people but i doubt they played DAO...so why should they believed someone who looks like consorting with demons...craving for more power ?Merill either is naive and still learning or a FLemeth in the making...she is starting to make me think that she is not a good person...she just dosen't know how to act around non Dalish
Never killed her as that seems a bit extreme...and i always kill Anders...but i always tell her to destroy the mirror....

should they be afraid of her when she's told them the mirror is no longer corrupted? Should they be afraid of the mirror? Marethari spread baseless lies about Merrill to the clan when Merrill told them repeatedly the shard was safe.
Suspicion and outright fear to the point of overruling rational thought are two very different things.

Were I a Dalish, and didn't have access to the knowledge or Merrill's time in Kirkwall and how she spent it, I would have to judge her by how she was in the clan.
First off, she is committed to the Dalish mission. Which is to relearn the ways of Arlathan so that when the elves have a homeland again, they may rebuild (this may include dangerous knowledge), and after they relearn everything, teach the old and forgotten ways to the city elves who have forgotten everything under human rule.
Pol, running away from Merrill to the Varterral may be justified by his Andrastian beliefs on blood magic (as told to him by Merethari) After he dies, Merethari is STILL asking Merrill to come back to the clan. Pardon me for being skeptical, but if Merrill did go back, she would be an even bigger outcast than she is in Kirkwall because the clan is scared of her and don't trust her (again, thanks to Merethari telling people she'll bring back the corruption from the eluvian)
If the eluvian was going to bring back the corruption that cost them two hunters, I think Merrill would have contracted it after all her years of studying it in close proximity. The in-game evidence supports Merrill successfully cleansing the Eluvian of corruption.

from what i saw in the game..never romanced her though....Merill is a walking cotradiction. On one side she wants to remake the eluvian and help the elves..on the other side she seems to be power hungry...forget the whole i am a cute girl and sound very naive...she wanted to make a deal with that demon TOrpor becuase it would gave her more power...and wanted to take the tomes instead of destroying them...
With Torpor there is a problem again.Merill claims she knows that all spirits are dangerous...then why is she always ready to believe everyone of them right away...Torpor was obviously lying..yet she didn't care..it's almost like she says...posses me demons..i don't care..me want power

-to counter Merrill love-
She was a well written character.
However, I still thought she was stupid and hated her.
