DA2'S Three Promised Improvements: Did Bioware fulfill her goals?

Graphics - 5. Nothing special. Environments were lifeless and dry, Kirkwall was too beige. Spell effects looked nice.
Combat - 3. Repetitive, frustrating, not challenging-- just long.

@ tmp, I relate them more to the characters from the Jak and Daxter series.
@dreadpiratesomethingorother: umad? What do you want me to do, go out and buy the PC version so I can take snapshots of the elves of the city, both the ******-poor designed ones and the ones that have some detail? I have very limited pictures to use none being any other elves like Tomwise or Lia's father, so don't say I'm being selective when I have barely anything to use. Makes you look like an ass. Also, I think it's safe to say that everyone hates the darkspawn look now. God knows I do, that was the first thing that made me flip out about DA2. Although, is it wrong for me to like the new emissary look so long as that one stays Hurlock only?
@ Erynnar I can understand people disliking how some elves turned out. But I don't see any comparison between Na'vi and the DA2 elves. What's worse is that I've seen people advocate for a change back to the DA:O elven look. And these are coming from the people who complain about things being a step backwards. It boggles the mind. I can understand people asking Bioware to put effort into how the characters look and make them all either beautiful or intentionally ugly. My favorite elves are:
Merrill
Athenril
Marethari
Orana
Lia
Fenris
Varania
Irenia
Fenarel
Pol
Zevran (*waits patiently for people to call me an idiot for liking how Zevran looks now*)
I don't know there's a lot. I'll admit some elves look horrendous, but that is by far no means to call for the game to change the look of the elves again. Just ask Bioware to put more effort into appearances of each elf. I love the new look save for a few isolated and very minor cases, and while people may see them as akin to Na'vi, I don't. As I said above, they're more J&D to me (however Jak could grow a goatee and look like a bamf).
I don't want them back as humans, but make most of them attractive and lose the mule ears! That's all I'm asking. I liked Orsino too.
Won't call you an idiot, but I threw up a little in my mouth. I had to look away when he said it must be his high cheekbones and pouty lips that made him atttractive. Coming from the guppy face...

Wanna know who wasn't done well? Nyssa and Huon. Nyssa was going bald and she looked like she was between 24-30!
The reason I ended up liking Zevran's new look was because he fit into how I expected him to look. that and I guess I couldn't see any differences between the two incarnations of Zev, no matter how hard I looked. I don't know.
@neppakyo: FATALITY!!

Zev didn't fit how I thought he should look. They put back flesh on that skeleton I left of him back in origins.

@neppakyo: FATALITY!!
He looked noticeably different, at least when it came to facial structure, and I felt, detail too. Probably was a side effect of the new look for Elves, but it was noticeably different for me.
Ooh, just wait till Sab gets here.

Yeah, unlike Leliana, Zev apparently stays dead. I think the same with nathanel too.
Yea Nathaniel isn't supposed to show up if he wasn't recruited or was hanged. Sadly, even with a fully upgraded Vigil's Keep the game thinks he's dead.

I looked it up out of curiosity but have to say there seems to be less similarity for these -- they're more like generic anime designs, with the lack of nose bridge thing being the most obvious difference.The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...

Plus, i'm not sure if character designs from a series of console games which had their prime 5-10 years ago is quite on the same level with the biggest blockbuster of all times, as far as public awareness goes

Why everytime I see a post that says the elves look horrendous I also see "they look like the Na'vi!!", I don't know. Can't I find one post that doesn't make that connection that doesn't work at all? Nope never going to happen. They look nothing like the Na'vi.
People were told many, MANY months before DA2 was released that the elves were being redesigned.
I see your image of;
...and raise you

...or alternatively;

They're not a perfect match, but the eyes, facial expressions (particularly merrill) and the new slightly oversized ears all bear a reasonable resemblance. This is more striking when animated than in still images, however. My first thought on entering the camp at Sundermount was that whoever did the graphics design had been watching Avatar a few too many times...
As for being told the elves were being redesigned months in advance, we were - and there were lots of concerned "What? Why? How? If it ain't broke..." questioning at the time.
I'm also not convinced the length of advance notice is all that relevant, particularly where player feedback has been so heavily divided (e.g. we also knew about the awesome buttons...but the consequences of that weren't clear until later).
Being warned of something coming, not wanting it to happen, trying to steer away from it wherever you can in discussions before that point... but ultimately having to watch in impotent frustration as something 'awesome' is introduced that ruins your immersion is...well...just like sitting through some of the cinematics in DA2, actually. *facepalm*

now I really have this urge to play Jak 3 again. I hope they end up making a PS3 Jak series game. That would be awesome, and knowing them it wouldn't rely on pressing some awesome button. It would just be awesome in its' own right.
Yep. Naughty Dog did make Uncharted 2, after all BTW, Jak 2 is much more fun Jak 3(IMO).

But if you think about it, the Na'vi forehead extends down and becomes the nostrils, whereas the elven nose extends into the forehead. I realize that may sound confusing, but there is a clear difference between the two.
As for the eyes, I see some similarity, but not a whole lot.

Actually if there's any standard to speak of, it's elves who are at least as tall if not taller than humans. Personally i found the shorter DAO elves to be a nice twist from the "standard" image, and just different enough in itself (especially when combined with their background)The Ethereal Writer Redux wrote...
well the elves in DA:O were broken. They did need fixing. Anyone who thought that they were perfectly elven then must think that shorter, pointy-eared humans should always be the standard.

When I played DA:O I was expecting something incredible for the elves. When I found out Iona was an elf, I stared in disbelief because I took her for a human. She was too human in appearance, and that saddened me.
But if you think about it, the Na'vi forehead extends down and becomes the nostrils, whereas the elven nose extends into the forehead. I realize that may sound confusing, but there is a clear difference between the two.
I agree that the Elves weren't especially distinctive in Origins, but they were generally fairly identifiable - although I can understand the wider desire to make them more unique, as with the Qunari.
I didn't personally prefer the new-look elves compared to the old, but I accept this is purely a matter of aesthetics, and people will have different opinions.
The DA2 elves aren't Nav'i clones - and the thicker nose and wide-set eyes common amongst the Nav'i are (generally) not seen. Hell, I think we'd all be a bit miffed if they were exact replicas...but the relatively regular connection people have been drawing suggests that there are enough common factors between the two to justify the occasional not-very-flattering comparison.
