Sorry for the longgggg post. This is something of a rebuttal to those who say ME2 has no plot. If you care about your crew and squadmates, there's a lot going on.
Frank's had a tough childhood but lived long enough to see what happens to tough guys with big mouths. He speaks softly and politely, but he's a cold killer when needed. He has no hesitation about using violence when necessary, but has a high threshold of what he considers necessary. He doesn't go looking for fights, but finishes them once they start.
He spared the Rachni queen. He saved Kaiden instead of Ashley, simply because Kaiden is a powerful biotic. Ash was a good soldier, but Shep — a good soldier himself — knows that good soldiers accept death for the greater good. If the choice had been between Kaiden and himself, Shep would have died. Same logic.
Saved Wrex too. Him and Tali were Shep's favorite squadmates.
Shep believes that when the Reapers come the Organics will either fight together or die separately. He's "All for one and one for all." He considers that pragmatic, not idealistic. He saved the Council and recommended Anderson for Council member. He'd work with the Batarians too if that proves possible.
He hates TIM, but it's a cold hate and Sehp would work with Balak the Batarian terrorist if that's what it took to stop the Reapers. He blew up the Collector base and never lost a night's sleep over it. He also reprogrammed the Heretic Geth, and implored the Quarians not to go to war, even though he was not impressed by the pacifist member of the Admiralty Board.
========
The rest of this is on Shep's standing with his team members and his view of them:
Shep feels much more like a big brother to Tali than a possible romantic interest. He's very protective of her. Any possibility of a romance is off. First, he's the faithful lover of Liara T'Soni. Second, because he'd never endanger Tali's health. Shep would love to see peace break out between the Geth and the Quarians, then see Tali go to her homeworld and live happily ever after with Kal Reeger.
=======
Shep's best bud on the Normandy 2 is Jacob. They are two uncomplicated guys -- men of action. Another close friend is Garrus, but Garrus often has his frustrations with the mercy Shep shows.
Shep views Miranda as more of a problem and a challenge than a rival. He understands that she considers herself more qualified than Shep and that she feels passed over. He takes her on many of the missions, including Jack's loyalty mission and Overlord, to show her Cerberus doesn't really deserve the loyalty she gives it. She also learns that, for all her strengths, she (Miranda) is not a good leader. She barks orders and berates missteps but doesn't inspire. She learns a lot watching Shepard. He rewards that by making her second team leader in the suicide mission.
Shep's probably too willing to take risks rather than expose any of his squadmates to danger. He uses them effectively in battles, but puts them behind good cover and then goes forward or to the flanks alone. It's something he's been unable to shake since Akuze. Watching Tombes die only reinforced that tendency.
Shep's more amused than impressed or worried about Jack's tough-girl posturing. Frank's seen tough — and mouthy. He seeks through her defensiveness. A love interest? No thanks, but he understands Jack better than she understands herself. He drags her along on Miranda's loyalty mission just to show her that Miranda is a human being — and because Miranda's willing to put herself in danger for the sake of someone else, an example Jack should look at.
Shep likes and respects Mordin, but doesn't let him off the hook for the genophage modification. "Look at the dead woman, Mordin." Shep kept the genophage research. Mordin and Shep have a lot in common -- they'd rather heal than kill, but will kill quickly and cleanly when required.
Joker's a wiseguy, but a d*** good helmsman. Shep respects him and is glad to have him. Shep also trusts unshackled EDI, mainly because she and the Normandy are one. Shep feels like any captain does about his ship. The only difference between Shep and Capt. Aubry of "Master and Commander" in that regard is that the Normandy can now actually speak.
Shep likes Kelly and finds her role to be very useful. He's not interested in a fling, however. Things would be different if he wasn't committed to Liara. Shep appreciates the people who keep the ship running, too — the engineers and the cook. He actually puts the food and the FBA couplings on a very hgh priority. A good ship is a happy ship. That's a tradition that's been true for as long as people have gone on long, dangerous voyages. When the crew's taken, Shep goes to the rescue without even thinking about it.
Shep greatly appreciates Dr. Chakwas' loyalty — both to him and to Joker — and is touched by it. During the bing, they drink a toast to all their fallen comrades. Shep also places a great emphasis on recovering the dogtags and placing the Monument at the old Normandy's crash site. In fact, he reports to the Citadel and to Anderson before going to Omega. He accepts Spectre reinstatement, buys the brandi, gets drunk with Chakwas and goes to the Normandy wreck site before going to Omega. He places the monument near the datapad of Navigator Pressley, who's acceptance of the other species is pretty much what the old Normandy stood for.
I'll stop prattling. Here's a to-the-point summary of how he stands with others:
Grunt: Likes him after the loyalty mission, but he's just a kid compared to Wrex.
Thane: Likes and respects him. He's the only person on the ship that Shep doubts he could win in a one-on-one.
Samara: Respects her enormously. Would never have even been tempted to take Morinth over her.
Kasumi: Let's her keep the graybox, but wonders if that was the right decision to let her obsess about the past. Will talk to Thane about the dangers of losing oneself in memories sometime.
Zaeed: Finds him useful but doesn't like him much.
Legion: Absolutely fascinates Shep. Learns everything he can from the Geth. Shep badly wants a peace between them and the Quarians.
