Dragon Age lives and dies by it's story, yet excluding the stone prisoner, which has openly been admitted that it was going to be part of the game in the first place, the two DLCs announced have distilled down to a short dungeon romp with scraps of plot and some reskinned armour sets.

Surely a game like Dragon Age should be playing to it's strength. And a mini arc campaign spanning a 6 month release schedule in say 3 - 3-6 hour packets is a much more palatable proposition and plays to the companies strength, story telling, over it's weakness, combat.

Not expecting an answer mind.

This is exactly what I was hoping for from DLC.  I will probably purchase the current content, but this poster captured exactly what I hoped from DLC.

I am beginning to wonder - I doubt I'll get a response to this, but - is DLC meant to be short, limited-plot dungeon romps between, say, expansions which have plot and character development?  Or will we see detailed plots and campaigns (not necessarily all in one DLC!) as DLC content?

I'm glad that the issue of gameplay hours as a one-dimensional metric was already raised. On a slightly related topic, though...

Question Can you give an estimate of how many XP this adventure might be worth, assuming all bad guys are killed, all traps disarmed, all codex entries found, and so on?

Question Will there be a merchant? Will there be any nice light or medium armour available?

Tales of Vesperia was longer then DAO also, put all the content in their game, no cheap DLC charging afterwards at launch day.

Except for the part where ToV DLC was buying level ups and skills.

They way it sounds this will be even shorter than WK. I think I'll pass this time.

WK was imo somewhat disappointing. This seems to have even less value (though it also costs a bit less).

Regarding voice acting, it's definitely one of our major development expenses, particularly when you realize that we have to hire additional voice actors for all of the different languages in which the game has been released. We ran some initial experiments with a voice-less version of Return to Ostagar and ultimately decided that we just needed to bite the bullet and go for it - it just didn't feel right for the followers not to be able to react in a voiced manner to the emotionally charged situation in which they find themselves. Note that we had to make this decision before DA:O's launch, without sales figures to help guide us. In the end, I'm glad we were able to find room in the budget to make it happen as the results are great.

I'm very glad to hear that and I'm sure that this decision raises the bar for DLC in general!

The epilogue save is right before the final battle? no its after the main battle i think , without checking .. This is why these DLC's are pointless for people not wanting to restart there beloved class or the whole game for 1 hour content , for me and many others Wardens keep dont work at all on previous saved games ... This is why Broken steel DLC for fallout3 was a brilliant DLC , compared to these ones ...

Love the main game , just dont understand the plans with the dlc's ... yeah making money ofc '''

I really looking forward to this and every new dlc for this excellent game. Especially as long as they are worthy extensions to DA universe and are done with exactly same care as original game.

If possible i want to know if there will be some DLCs situated after main story, maybe little more from important characters and especially party members after final battle or something... or are you considering it at least?

I wouldn't mind seeing some DLC placed even before the current timeline. From the history of DA it sounds like there were some pretty wicked battles, IMO epic battles wouldn't be too bad DLC, sometimes even the mini-quests start to get old. I say, keep it fresh and keep it coming.

Would love to see some content thats replayable. Such as a dungeon with multiple boss types and rare loot drops that require many play-throughs to possibly get all items.

$5.00 isn't much for an hr worth of playing time. ( sure I would like to see longer content ie 5-10 hr's worth or more but who wouldn't. ) You would be paying the same amount if you rented a movie from a video store that would take up anywhere from 65 mins - 3hr's ( including the previews ) for 5 buck's + tax & that doesnt include the snacks you might buy. So what's the big deal ?

Mr. Bartel, I don't know if this has been discussed yet, but can you tell us anything about the schedule for DLC? We had Warden's Keep on Day 1, and a holiday release would make Return to Ostagar about 1.5-2 months later. Is that the kind fo schedule that DLC will be kept too, or will it be more variable as time progresses? Do you guys, if you can tell us this, have planned out the areas of the story/world that you want to further expand and explore, or are things being taken one step at a time?

Finally, are you guys planning on focusing on short, focused, side quests like Warden's Keep (and Return to Ostagar sounds like a similar style to me, though of course I don't know yet), or will things be more varied, with longer, more complicated quests also being released at some point?

Thanks for any answers you can provide. I'm pretty excited about the new DLC being announced, though at the same time, I'm also not sure how long I want to keep buying DLC, because I prefer one-time, discrete expenditures on games over continuing regular or semi-regular payments. But I bought the various NWN premium modules, and I was generally happy with those.

Because:

The problem, I think, is that in the past, we have been able to expect true expansions with full, coherent stories. If we are willing to pay $5 for one hour chunks, then we are giving the game industry the green light to never again make REAL expansion packs. I have no doubt that 1 hour chunks at $5 per pop is easier and cheaper and way more profitable for devs. Consumers determine the market value of this content. Demand more and you'll get more if the devs can swing it. Demand less and you'll get less whether the devs can swing more or not. Don't be sheep people.

Everything taking place after the main story would fit better in a larger package, i.e. an expansion. Since continuing the main story is a big thing, the DLC/Expansion's size should reflect that. But nevertheless, I too hope for a bigger expansion! Image IPB

Yeah, I don't mind the dlc, but i don't get the epilogue thing after beating the game. You can't travel anywhere, and none of the city's are open, yet it's suppose to be before the big battle. It's a very odd concept, without having any areas where enemies respawn, or  cites to sell/ restock. There really is no incentive for  people who beat the game...the new items are only as good as the quest is long.

Anyway, logic fallacy arguments aside, my question is:

With the apparent success of episodic content breathing life back into the point and click adventure genre, as shown by 2 seasons of sam and max, and a new monkey island campaign by telltale, why is it that Bioware hasn't adopted a similar DLC strategy?

Dragon Age lives and dies by it's story, yet excluding the stone prisoner, which has openly been admitted that it was going to be part of the game in the first place, the two DLCs announced have distilled down to a short dungeon romp with scraps of plot and some reskinned armour sets.

True words... If I wanted to run through yet another dungeon packed with stuff I would be playing the newest add-on for warhammer or WoW. These dungeon-grinding events, granted, probably have the bioware "touch" (goood)...but in the end it is still just a grindfest with no follow-up story or the slightest impact on the world that is dragon age.
Give me something that has meaning towards the original game, that builds smartly on existing stories (thereby avoiding the one hour "new shiny ones" DLC), something that speaks of more than mindless grinding. For instance, I would probably run through the entire game again if a new specialization class or a new NPC was introduced accompanied by a cool story (and buy the DLC's needed).

These?  I found them.  They could be any dead king's armor.  You can't prove a thing.

The game seems to lend itself much more to quests and campaigns that gobble up the hours. i'd MUCH rather they put something substantial together and released it further down the line (with a price point to match) instead of little short things that are over before you know it. (and of course if they keep pumping out lots of hour long missions, before you know it you may have something approaching the cost of the full length game but with a fraction of the content).

i'll take additional content over no additional content anyday, but imho they should be doing it differently. ah well.

Do you have any numbers on the subject?  I'm actually somewhat interested in this subject.  As it appears to me, doing short DLC like this means that they have to re-contract voice actors (Mr. Bartel mentioned they have the companion voiceovers in this module) and incur other expenses repeatedly for small amounts of work.  On the other hand, with a larger content release, such as a traditional expansion, economies of scale would probably allow them to get more for their money from the various other people they have to work with.  On the other hand, I'm sure they wouldn't be using this model if it were not profitable to them.  But how/why it is cheaper is non-obvious from an economic point of view.

Overall, I would however like to see full expansion packs.  My ideal situation would be seeing a real expansion planned for the future, and a couple of shorter DLC modules to fill out the main game and maintain interest in the game while waiting for the epxansions.

Eyesofastorm: Yes I understand that but most of us have beaten the game 2 - 3 ( some finished all origins) different times already & need more content to keep us here. They never said if there would or wouldn't be an expansions pack but some people don't want to wait 3- 5 months ( or more )for a expansions pack for 30 - 40hr's plus a few side quest's. when they have beaten the game & got all of the achievements and completed all the origin's.. you got to see it from other peoples prospective aswell..

And obvious many warriors use golden armor ... jeeez, some armor is made for ceremony  not for combat, Cailians for ex, isnt smart to wear "look at the golden-boy" here i am, who wears that in combat? unless you're clearly delluded and live in a fairy-tale. Just as real commanders doesnt get saluted in warfields to prevent snipers, you dont wear golden armor unless yuou want people to know who you are.
