Hello, I like Jan Jansen, and I often include him in my BG parties.

Every time I play with him, his performance reminds me of character actor Wallace Shawn playing the Grand Nagus on Star Trek:Deep Space Nine. Wallace Shawn is currently playing Blair's stepfather on Gossip Girl, if anybody here watches that. But his definitive performance for me is the Grand Nagus. He's played basically the same character without the makeup in a whole bunch of stuff.

My question is, has anybody else ever made the same connection? I just wrote an email to Jack Roth (the voice actor for Jan), asking him if he was influenced in his performance by Mr. Shawn. If he answers me, I'll pass it along here.

Mr. Roth was kind enough to answer me, and it turns out that although he was aware of Wallace Shawn's work, he was not consciously thinking about it when he did the voice.

Still, if there were ever a live-action version of BG, I think Wallace Shawn would be perfect for the part.

My Q&A with Jack Roth (Jan Jansen himself!) follows:

Dear Mr. Roth,

I know it was a very long time ago, but I believe you once voiced a video game character for a game called "Baldur's Gate - Shadows of Amn". The character's name was Jan Jansen, and I am a very big fan of that performance.

If you could spare a moment for a question from a fan, I would like to know if you were in any way thinking of or inspired by character actor Wallace Shawn when you did that performance?

Every time I listen to your performance in that game, I immediately think of Wallace Shawn playing the Ferengi Grand Nagus in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Your performance of Jan Jansen was very endearing to many fans, and people are still playing that game and are fans of the character you created.

Thank you for your time,

Thanks for the kind words.  That was so long ago, I can hardly remember it.  Even though I of course knew
of Mr. Shawn’s great work, his character or voice  was the furthest thing from my mind.  It was just a character
that felt right for the role based on the casting description and the Director’s notes.  I love doing the games
and although I haven’t done many over the years, I hope to do more.  Some years back I played Doc Steiner
on ‘Dead Head Fred,’ which was a blast.

Thanks again...
Jack Roth
