yeah but we're talking about the leader of a racist terrorist association who have unlimited funds... I think it is fear that he smokes, he's an Anti-hero (until ME3), he do some bad stuff but it's for the greater good.. he's D4rK but he has a heart of gold...

plus, Smoking diminishes stress... If I was the leader of a racist terrorist association who have unlimited funds and who ressurected a war hero because you want to get rid of an ancient specie living passing through an unusable passage because they work for another ancient specie who comes from dark space and wants to destroy the world for the Lulz... well I'd be stressed too... There are plenty of plants that could be in that cig which would reduce his stress even more ^_^

read the novels, smoking is no longer harmful healthwise and TIM smokes because he enjoys that and drinking alchohal and tobaaco that are homemade on earth. It reminds him of simpler times

The smoking is obviously part of what characterizes him in the game. And if that promotes something bad, so what? They are going to stop featuring people smoking because there are persons out there that are so weak-minded that they can't even watch that?

Blah.

For all we know it's the future variant of the e-cig.

The OP's being a typical anti-smoker.  Presumes that somehow after all this time people are apparently clueless as to the risks of smoking when everyone's long known it's not healthy and thinks the mere sight of someone smoking is going to somehow override a person's intellect and will to turn them into a rabid chainsmoker.

It's true though,  after seeing TIM make smoking look cool I went out and bought ten cartons of smokes.

While I don't agree with the OP, the rudeness in this thread is a bit unwarranted.

Smoking looks cool.

Aside from that it has been confirmed (I can't remember if it was a codex, or a novel) that all the negative effects from smoking have LONG been eliminated. Its now seen as a sort of luxury, a symbol of wealth.

Besides if biotechnology has gotten to the point that it says it has in ME, smoking is a non problem.

Not sure how many of the anti smoking or just any anti- crowd you've had to deal with, but the core issue with them is not whatever thing they're against, but exerting control since despite all the on hand information we have as to health risks, or raising the cost of cigs as a form of discouragement people still do choose to smoke.

To use smoking as an example, look at how the level of bans have evolved over time.  No smoking in certain public places, understandable.  But some areas are wanting to ban smoking in your own home or in your car.  That's getting into the scary control zone.

So... what I've gathered is that you support censorship?

Wow.

If people are so easily influenced by a character in a video game's actions, then there is an issue.

Belmont CA has banned smoking in homes and that is one town over from me here in San Mateo so I am very familiar with these laws.  But that doesn't justify being a jerk to someone.  You can disagree with someone without having to be rude.

According to Retribution, it seems like tobacco is neither harmful to health nor does it cause dependence, in the future.

The Illusive Man smokes because he enjoys to.

It's rather simple, TIM smokes cause he's evil. Cause smoking is evil lots of evil people do it so you know it evil. It's the modern day black hat. This also means you could have know TIM will turn on you in ME3, he's a smoker.

This, ladies and gentlemen.

Just because someone brings up a point you disagree with/don't see the point of, doesn't mean you've got to start being harsh.

Agree to disagree and disagree tastefully(ironic when you consider the topic) but don't start throwing names around, making assumptions, or pointing fingers.

Never trust a man who doesn't smoke.

/me lights a cigar. *puff*

It's our flaws and vices that makes us human. This is what separates us from the cold efficiency of animals. TIM would be a shallow one-sided character without his cigarette.

What? Why does TIM smoking = flaw? Smoking doesn't even cause health problems in the ME universe anymore. Smoking is a luxury and symbol of wealth now.

If anything its pointing out how rich he is.

You're also assuming that smoking is bad for your health IN THE FUTURE. For all we know, cloned organs are cheap enough that the Illusive Man can just get a pair of fresh lungs from his HMO after smoking an entire carton of cigs.

This. And this:

The Illusive Man smokes because he enjoys to.

It's in Mass Effect: Retribution in one of the first descriptions of TIM. Smoking and drinking bourbon are his 'earthly pleasures' that define humanity in a way, and since they don't form a grave health hazard anymore due to medicine he worries not about the health consequences of his nicotine and alcohol use but simply enjoys them.

As for taking offense to seeing someone smoke, whether you're quitting or not: Your choices are your own. No one needs consider them.

I've unfortunately been a smoker long before I saw TIM smoke a cigarette. Smoking is bad yes. Is it the Illusive Man's fault I'm still smoking? No.

The novels actually address this. While many vices were phased out, some things like smoking still remained, namely because it no longer could cause cancer (whether due to changes in the cigarettes or due to medical science, I forget)... so it sort of caught on as a fringe "thing" to do... basically, TIM is a hipster.

Also, the books make it quite abundantly clear that narcotics useage among humans (and aliens) are still rampant as ever. This isn't the Star Trek universe where everyone is happy-go-lucky upstanding citizens. Earth itself is a polluted dump - rife with poverty, pollution and suffering... it's no eden.

Humanity hasn't progressed sociologically or culturally in the ME universe as far as you may think it has.

^^This. I'm pretty sure it was through medical advances if I rememeber. However, acording to the Mass Effect Wiki, some eezo exposure can still cause cancer and kill the victims, and the wiki doesn't lie :P. Also, did he compare cancer to paedophilia?
