I like how LionHead achieved the multiplayer in Fable 3. Were as the you the player can choose to have someone join in online. And if there is another player that joins you online it is their own hero.

I think the points that have been made about multiplayer with strangers being a force against RP are absolutely, indisputably borne out by what actually happens in "real life" in MMOs.

In terms of M'Morrapuggers, it's clearly the case that RP is borderline impossible unless you can effectively isolate/choose the people you play with, because there is always some OOC person wandering through your game going "sup dawg" or "lol my joystick doesn't werk properly lol can u lol help me lol" or "a/s/l?" depending on which MMO it is.

I'm not suggesting we're all into mad cosplay at our computers and only conversing in ancient Brythonic, but just basic IC play is easier to play without randoms dropping in to tell you how great their new digital watch is.

It's not so bad in an environment where you choose who you play with, like certain co-op campaigns and stuff that I know lots of us enjoyed for years, but if it's SP vs. MMO, SP definitely makes it easier to stay in char.

Well that is why I think that with Fable 3 it worked out great. You got to choose to let in 1 other player or not or even to "see" how many people were playing in their own "worlds".

Are you trying to say its not possible to role play online? Because that is a blatant lie. If anything the role play is much better when you have other people role playing with you.

Their characters aren't as consistent as pre-written characters, so that makes roleplaying harder.  And they break character from time to time.  And they're not always available.  If my character has some sort of on-going relationship with their characters, what happens when they're not online?

No, single player is better in every respect.  And the gap will only get bigger.

Exactly, have a coop mode where each player controls a character and a companion in the party and they can quest together. If you want to play single player then you can control everyone like it is now.

Also why can't it work with more than 2 people? It can, everyone controls a character.

Not everybody has someone to play with Skilled Seeker, have you thought of that? Mnay gamers are on their own.
How are they going to play if  they need another sitting next to them and can't get anyone.?

Unles of course it can be controlled with AI. Then the computer can play too. :)

Whatever, it's clear you lack an open mind. Role playing with humans is much more fun and exciting than predictable pre-written characters.

It has nothing to do with having an open mind.  it has to do with what I want from my game, and what I want is a relaxing atmosphere (there is no relaxing atmosphere wherein I am not alone) wherein I can roleplay a character in a coherent setting.

If the people that character knows suddenly disappear (say, the other player logs off), the game is broken.  If the behaviour of those characters suddenly changes (control of them is passed from one player to another), the game is broken.

There is no way for a multiplayer game to give me as good a roleplaying environment as a single-player game.  Ever.

Clearly what you want from a roleplaying game is different.  Still, I'm interested to know how you deal with the problems I've described.  If you've been playing with people, and those people are no longer available, how do you handle that while remaining in-character?

Well we come up with in character excuses for why a character needs to depart the company. It can be as simple as needed to tend to their wounds. Anyway I'm not asking for no single player, not at all. I'm asking for a multiplayer options in all games though.

If there's an extensive multiplayer component to the game, I don't want to pay for it.  Sell me the single-player only game at a reduced price.  Or make mutliplayer a big DLC add-on that I don't have to buy.

Mutliplayer costs zots.  In my mind, those zots are wholly wasted.

Incidentally, I'd much rather roleplay a team of characters rather than just one.  Multiplayer typically involves each player playing only one character.

Multiplayer is doing to the game industry what reality shows have done to prime time television.

Where can you roleplay a team of characters? All the games I've played, you create 1 character only.

Also your argument is illogical. Many games have features you might not like or use. That doesn't mean they'll sell you the game piecemeal, too much effort and no reward. If you don't believe you're getting value for what you want, wait for the price to go down. Having said that, I'd be fine with multiplayer DLC.

Holy stars, Gothol. What does M'Morrapuggers mean? And what does a/s/l mean? I only speak English in English, I've never heard those terms. However, M'Morrapugger sounds hilarious.

I do agree with NWN. I've played that with other people, but I know them well, and I like them all. That is completely different than what I see in the regular MMO games. That's where your stuff comes in, the ones I  bolded. Only in my language, hence, the (non) meaning is the same.

There wont be a death of single player. unfortunately game companies are going to expand on multiplayer as more people become "casual" gamers from social networks. Multiplayer gives people the ability to "socialize."

With that said, there will always be a market for single player and for their story telling. The only thing we can do as consumers is to support single player games by buying them. I don't think we should overreact. Lets allow these companies make the mistake of "every game will have a multiplayer" when sales don't reflect their vision they will go back to making more single player experience.

PATIENCE is key here.

Thanks Sussurus. It does work when I pronounce in the English way.

Age/Sex/Location? Well, hell. That doesn't sound good to me at all. Thanks, Upsettinghorts.

Anyway, if they do implant MP into SP games, I simply have to wait and see if the implantation has corrupted the SP in any way. If it did, I'll pass. If not, I'll consider buying it. After further research, that is.

Hehe. When someone asks for "asl?" ,they want a reply like "18/F/Alaska"

Kinda funny about the confusion on that. And yeah, for that other thing too

Anyhoo. Said it before, I prefer the NWN1/2 way. Either for a LAN game with friends etc, or online for a persistant world.
