Welcome to the Twitter Thread.

In
this great age of information and the internet, we're blessed with many things. One of those is contact with video game developers. Many notable persons involved with the developement of Mass Effect 3 will tweeting info here and there, most notably, BioWare co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, father of Mass Effect - Casey Hudson, and of course wonderful producers and developers such as Jesse Houston and Christina Norman.

Thisis a great way as well, for you, the individual in a crowd of many to personally ask the Devs questions concerning Mass Effect 3

How do I ask a question?

After logging into Twitter, in the "What's Happening" bar, type the following

@(username of dev)  [Question, comment, etc]

It's rather simple.

I've caved in and joined the sweaty herd on twitter too; THE SHAME! Not exactly sure how to use the thing (or WHY), but I'll give it a shot. I'll probably end up saying too much and getting fired... but it'll be a fun five minutes.

Ha ha, that's good stuff. I'm planning on filming the destruction recording session so we can put it on the 'making of' DVD or some other dev video...

I should add (before I get in trouble :)) that I have absolutely no idea IF we're making a 'making of' or anything, but we're filming it just in case... and because blowing stuff up is fun.

If you just tap the melee button, Shep will do a strike with the current weapon. Quick repeated taps will have Shep do a rapid combo of strikes.  I don't think they've said whether or not the 2nd and 3rd attacks in the chain do extra damage, or if they're just extra animations to provide some visual variety.  If you press and hold the melee button, Shep will execute a heavy melee attack.  Depending on the class this may or may not involve the omniblade.  So far, all the classes shown use the omniblade in some fashion, except for the adept, who does a biotic palm strike instead.

The first and second strikes are about the same in terms of timing, and damage... the third strike is a bit stronger; causes slightly more damage and can cause a bigger reaction (if I remember right). These attacks don't use the omniblade, they're pistol or rifle based (basically a better looking/feeling ME2 elbow of doom).

Only the heavy melees (hold melee button) use the omniblade, and even then not for all classes... the engineer for example uses a sort of close range incinerate attack (generates a burst of fire while slashing fist backwards and upwards).

The vanguard... well... hehehe... it's satisfying. :o

"When you say "Procedural foley" you mean real-time sound effects?"

"We built this really cool system that detects movement & plays corresponding armour/cloth sounds. Only way we could cover everything!"

Animation guys: Okay, here are hundreds and hundreds of conversation cutscenes, now put sounds on them.

Sound guys: HEEEELLLLL NO! *write program to detect movement and do it for them*

Seriously, that's some cool tech and a definite timesaver.

You, Sir, are 100% bang on with that. ME2 had about 20,000 conversation animations in it, I don't know how many ME3 has but I really didn't think it was a smart time investment doing all those movement sounds so we came up with a super awesome way to create these sounds at runtime... and it sounds considerably better than if we'd done it by hand. Haven't heard of any other game thats done this so we're pretty proud of it and will be taking it forward and enhancing in future Bioware games.

It's also meant we've been able to spend more time on making more interesting and reactive audio for the the more 'important' stuff based around player choice and actions.

Happy Halloween!

Strangely enough, I found myself using both those weapons on the Banshee earlier today. She's pretty robust.

Ha ha, I wish. No, I just started with the Revenant, then swapped it out for the Mattock.

Soooo Mattock? yeah, let's go with that, by the way, if I didn't buy the Mattock in ME2, will I have it in ME3?

Sorry, not sure I'm allowed to answer that one. (It's not a big secret, I just like to err on the side of caution.)

Although I would add that I expect the BW party to be rather crazy... there's going to be a LOT of developers there who have been working non-stop for months, and this is our little chance to go a bit nuts. I know I will be :D

Don't know if it was asked, if not, can someone ask if they still plan to start Cerberus News 1 Month before ME3 ships in March

I can let you know it hasn't been forgotten. I have a note reminding me to ask about it after we wrap up work on the main game. (I believe the original plan was two weeks of news, not one month, by the way. No idea if that will change.)

I'd love to play with the devs, but are there any devs playing on PC? In all the tweets they seem to play the Xbox 360 version. I'd be nice to see the other consoles get some lovePosted Image

PC all the way bro.  Less audio compression B)

I'm mcnerdburger on Origin.

Some clarification on the Normandy upgrades issue: Manveer and I are both right. He is correct in the sense that none of the gameplay research upgrades will carry over to ME3. However the Nomandy upgrades (shields, armor and cannon) do have an impact in the game and are do carry forward. Hope that helps.

So... music stuff :)

Shep's quarters has a stereo system again with a bunch of tracks on it...

We wanted to add something to the citadel to give the place an atmospheric feel due to all the stuff that's happening around you. The Normandy is YOUR ship and we didn't want to force a feel or emotion on the player forever so we didn't add any ambience music there. A lot of people found the music on the Normandy in ME1 far too repetitive and often conflicted with what was happening on screen.

Also, I was really worried that if we had music on the Normandy then basically the entire game has nonstop music... that's not very cinematic. Watch any film and you'll notice that most films have music for only a third at most. You need a break every now and then as a palette cleanser. Plus there's a whole lot of content on the Normandy that would have felt weird with the generic music playing. Therefore we added a lot of music over these scenes on the Normandy. That to me is far more important; the relationship developments, romances and conflicts that happen on the Normandy are far more important to hit musically so that's where we focused our attention.

Hope that helps explain the decisions :) Music is such a subjective thing that of course not everyone will agree, but as long as the big stuff hits well and feels right then hopefully we've done our job :)

Thanks!

Ha ha, that's a good question! My point was that the Normandy is your home... where you should feel safe and neutral. I wasn't really talking about ownership from Shepard's perspective... more the players.

'Autistic integrity' is tasteless, and it will get you banned. Fancy that.

As well as referring to a dev with the.. colourful terminology above.

If you aren't going to keep it civil, you will be removed from the forums.

Yep, the friend requests are flooding in, but I won't be filling up all the slots until the event starts, so that everyone gets a fair shake at sending a request. Maybe I'll see you online, so you can show me how it's done. :)
