Yes, and his personal class in ME1 was most similar to the ME1 vanguard

Yup each of the squadmates pretty much resembled one of the classes.

Ashley - Soldier
Garrus - Infiltrator
Tali - Engineer
Kaidan - Sentinel
Liara - Adept
Wrex - Vanguard

They kind of did it in ME2 but it was a bit more wishy-washy for some of the squadmates

Soldier - Zaeed and Grunt
Infiltrator - Garrus and Kasumi
Engineer - Legion and Tali
Sentinel - Miranda and err... Mordin even though all he had was Tech skills... (oh well he did study biology :wizard:)
Adept - Samara and Jack (although the latter's personal evolution hinted at being split with Vanguard)
Vanguard - Thane and Jacob

This is why I doubt we'll see either Grunt or Zaeed anywhere close to being potential permanent squadmates or it'd be Soldier overkill

Huh, never would have pegged Thane or Jacob as Vanguards and would have thought Mordin was more of an Engineer/Infiltrator. I wonder if they'll continue the "wishy washy" trend in ME3.

Mordin was initially planned to be a biotic.  There's a little left over dialogue from when he still was.

Vanguard - Thane and Jacob

Thane was more a hybrid of Infiltrator and Adept, like a Vanguard is a hybrid of Soldier and Adept, and a Sentinel is a hybrid of Engineer and Adept.

So Thane was a hybrid of an Adept and a Soldier/Engineer hybrid?  Too many hybridz!

Thane defies classification.  He spits in the face of classification and then snaps its neck.

I know I"m late to the game in responding to what species I'd like to play in the ME Universe. An Asari, I'd love to play from the perspective of an 80 year old maiden finally free from her Mother's side and exploring the galaxy only to wind up impacting the universe over the next 700 years.

...

Wait did I just put Dragon Age 2 in space?

Hence why I said it was 'wishy-washy' as to how some of them could be defined as being akin to similar classes. :wizard:;)

But one of the defining characteristics of the Infiltrator is that it has tech capabilities.  Thane does not.  Shredder Ammo is a combat power.  Weapon choice and stealth flavor aside, Thane's focus on combat and biotics makes him more of a Vanguard than an Infiltrator.

Regardless, discussing squadmate classes is largely irrelevant as they no longer rigidly adhere to ME1's meter system.  In ME1, if you were a Soldier and you brought along Kaidan and Tali, your combat/biotic/tech meters would fill to represent your party's strengths (2 points in combat, 1 in biotics, 3 in tech).  Bioware eschewed that system in ME2.  Perhaps it's more useful to think of the squadmates in terms of the roles they can fill and the enemies they do well against, as opposed to blandly filling up combat/biotic/tech meters that have little bearing on actual gameplay.

This is why I don't think a Soldier overload needs to mean anything.  The Soldier squadmates could provide different powers and fulfill different roles.  For instance, they've already mentioned how Vega will focus on survivability while Ashley's focus will be lethality.  Both characters could be described as Soldiers, but that doesn't need to define their roles or preferred opponents.  Zaeed was a Soldier who worked well against geth while Grunt was a Soldier who did better against organic foes, especially husks.

Edit: grammar

Looks like they're preparing to finish the game by November, when it was originally planned to come out. That'll give them an extra four months to re-refine the game -- which is wonderful -- and hopefully get some larger DLC planned. I'm hoping that for the DLC, they are recording VAs.

It's all coming together now, isn't it? And they have plenty of time to thoroughly test and pretty it all up. Stay on target, Bioware :)

Loving the comment about doing more with Insanity's scaling.

So glad they delayed ME3. 4-5 months of polishing and refining should be a total payoff at the end of the tunnel.

I'd say Thane doesn't fit into a class at all. Vanguards specialize in CQC. Thane doesn't have a barrier or anything like it. He also lacks a shotgun which every vanguard has. Thane is no vanguard. Neither is Jack for that matter. She's more adept than vanguard due to no barrier and low health. Jacob is the closest to a vanguard squaddie in ME2.
