Yeah, I think you're right about that. And yet everything is pretty well lit - I certainly didn't have any trouble seeing anything that was going on at least. I was talking more about a night mission that added a new level of difficulty to combat just because you can barely see anything. I guess it would be similar to that one side mission in ME2 where you're on a planet with a really foggy (for lack of a better word) atmosphere and you couldn't see your enemies very well until they were right in front of you. Can you imagine husks suddenly coming at you from out of the dark? Those things give me the willies anyway.
Actually there are two such side-missions: The Blood Pack Communication Relay where you have beacons to light your way and Kixen coming out at you from the fog and the other is N7: Anomalous Weather Detected where you fight Geth.
It certainly adds an interesting dimension to the fight (particularly the Geth one which I found quite tough on hard core).
Of course a night mission wouldn't be as bad visibility wise as fog. If you're prepared for the mission you probably have torches or night vision lenses.
