^^^Sounds like the next Pulse episode will have quite a few bits of ME3 content?

Wasn't sure if you'd catch that one or not so I came racing to update it. Man, you never miss a beat, Vertigo.

I'm definitely looking forward to this -- I want more booming Virmires and less... duets.

I wish they will sound like Sovereign, instead of Harbinger.

That's effectively what I was asking him, actually.

They mean sound effects rather than voices, right? Sovereign was a Canadian anti-bear trash can slowed down to get a lower pitch. We never heard Harbinger's sound effect because he was in dark space.

No, that's about exactly the amount of bromance I had in mind.

Which is the maximum amount of bromance.

I believe Steven King wrote a book about that... it did not end well for the Bad Aliens.

I hope this turns out to be true. Too often it feels like if you don't sleep with a romanceable character, then you get screwed out of any dialog with them, and non-romanceable characters feel like they're made to be less important.

I think ME1 handled the whole "bromance" thing just a little better.  You could basically get a lot out of conversations with any character that wasn't available to romance.  However, it was impossible to be "just friends" with potential LIs for your sex without them thinking you were coming on to them.

In ME2, I thought the best conversations were with Mordin, Legion, and Samara.  None of those characters are LIs.  However, LI dialogue was severely cut off if you weren't pursuing them romantically, regardless of Shepard's sex.  Miranda, Tali, and Garrus only had three non-romance convos that I am aware of.

You know what gets me, though? No one ever seems to complain about Garrus' "Commander. I wanted to thank you." in ME1. After a certain point he does that to me in an endless loop and there's simply nothing left. And it strikes me relatively early because I'm one of those nuts who completes every single assignment possible as soon as I take off from the Citadel more often than not.

I honestly find that thing much worse than his infamous calibrations.

Yeah, Garrus had so little dialogue. He's my bro, yet he was always busy. Damned calibrations! :crying:

DO NOT.  REMIND ME.  OF THAT.

It's like calibrations, only much longer and you don't see it coming.

But it has the advantage of being able to vary the conversation a little every time you do it.

That is true, at least. I find it belly-burstingly hilarious when Shepard remarks that she doesn't have time for it, given I'm blatatly meta-ing the insinuation that she's heard it a dozen times already.

...

But then I feel horrible and immediately talk to him again. :(

Garrus didn't really have much to say in ME1, and Tali in ME1 is basically a codex entry. The ME1 versions of them are IMO the least developed characters of the series, except for Morinth. The writing for them is a lot better in ME2. Wrex was amazing, but an exception to the general pattern. I wish more non-LIs felt as developed as Wrex, and given some time in the main plot's spotlight like he was.

As for the romanceable characters, I didn't think Liara had a whole lot going on, as far as private conversations, other than being the Asari Love Interest.

In ME2, I thought the best conversations were with Mordin, Legion, and Samara.

I wouldn't agree with Legion and Samara, but I think "best conversations" is a subjective thing. I wish they'd gotten some spotlight in the main plot. Considering you don't need them in the suicide mission, it's kind of like "Why did I bother recruiting them? What is their role in the story again?"

However, LI dialogue was severely cut off if you weren't pursuing them romantically, regardless of Shepard's sex. Miranda, Tali, and Garrus only had three non-romance convos that I am aware of.

Oh, I never said it was dependent on gender, but yeah, it felt like you were robbed with the LI characters if you didn't (or couldn't) romance them.

The point is it seems non-romanceable characters are prioritized as less-important by Bioware. It's looking like all squadmates in ME3 will be ex-potential-LIs or new-potential-LIs. I don't think we'd ever see someone like Grunt be as important to the plot and series as someone like Liara.

I agree with this passage very strongly. I didn't quite grasp the rationale behind the two characters' fandoms in ME1. Then I heard from some that Tali's character was weakened in ME2 and so, going into it, I could only ponder how she could become less significant than she already was. She really falls off into obscurity into ME1, so I was neither anticipating her presence in the sequel nor remotely sure how she had garnered such a rabidly-devoted following.

Simply put, I was incredibly pleasantly surprised concerning both characters' treatment in ME2.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure people just misremember and get confused. ME2 pretty much establishes Tali's personality and she has more presence in ME2 than most other squadmates, what with being one of the VERY few characters to have any role in the story outside of their recruitment and loyalty missions. Heck, Grunt really isn't even in his own recruitment mission. And yeah... Garrus... In both games he has a very awesome introduction, but then is kind of absent for the rest of the game.

Sad but true. Romancing him as a female Shepard in ME2 sort of changes that up a bit but otherwise I absolutely concur with you.

And while Bioware certainly knows how big a following he has, I can't imagine there's too much they can do to change that now that he can be dead at the start of the final act.

Which brings things back again to LIs. If you're male, or a female who doesn't romance Garrus, then his importance, presence, and character development feels far less. It's good news that it's on the table to better develop the non-romance path for LIs.

And while Bioware certainly knows how big a following he has, I can't imagine there's too much they can do to change that now that he can be dead at the start of the final act.

Yet it looks like he's going to be one of the few "permanent" squadmates who joins Shepard on the Normandy, even though he could die in ME2. Wrex and Legion are both popular characters who can die, like Garrus, but they're looking to be cameos or guest squadmates for a mission or two at best. I think what got Garrus his spot as one of the main squadmates in ME3 is that he's a popular romance, in addition to being a popular character.
