And are you saying that you never read the same book twice or watched a movie a second time?
Honestly, that's a poor analogy. Reading a book or watching a movie for a second time is an entirely different experience from doing so the first time - or, rather, it should be. Iain M Banks' Use of Weapons, for instance, is almost a different book on the second read. Knowing what's going to happen in George R. R. Martin's A Game of Thrones changes the tone of the book immensely. Nothing can replace that first, unspoiled experience. And, then, one can go on to enjoy the reflective experience of a rewatch or a reread knowing that one is going to experience something different.
I have to say, I'm very disappointed in some of the Mass Effect fandom right now. It's one thing for some people to rip apart the .tlk to find out what's inside it for themselves; it's another thing to spread that information all over the web. The Song of Ice and Fire fandom, by contrast, has been exquisitely careful in keeping spoilers away from new watchers of the Game of Thrones tv series based on Martin's books, to the point where a guy who became a fan web-celebrity for his Game of Thrones reaction videos, which gained over a million views, remained completely unspoiled for the climactic events towards the end of the first season. That is what a good fandom should be about: helping people to get the best experience possible of the work in question.
I agree completely.
I have no idea what kind of person would not only go: "the entire story of Mass Effect 3? I'll read it all now so there are no surprise or excitement when I gat the game" But also deliberately post that information everywhere online (and on this very site. Let's be honest: spoiler tags are easy to miss on posts here)
I also agree that it is a very poor analogy. I'm in love with the mass effect series, yet have only ever played the main game through once on both Mass Effect 1 and Mass Effect 2. Playing it when you know exactly what will happen, what everyone will say, and what every event will look like is fairly dull compared to your first time.
I actually find watching movies more than twice unbearable. Normally I wait to wait for at leat a year or two before I can go back to watch/read something.
Makes this whole leak thing even more annoying <_<
