Saw the basically final mass effect 3 e3 demo today...wow. No doubt in my mind our best demo, and our best game, ever.

I get the feeling Cerberus Cells almost always go rogue with how many bad elements you keep running into.

That's because Shepard contacts the cells only when there is trouble. If everything is running smoothly, he's not even aware of it.

It's similar to how Warden Kuril, who is in charge of Purgatory, sees daily the worst the sapient life has to offer, and becomes convinced that everyone's a criminal, and he's the only one who's right. Or if you deal daily with calls from people who can't get their omni-tools to work, you might start wondering if the world is composed of idiots. Too much exposure to problems. Such is Shepard's job.

Besides, a story only exists when there are problems, some conflict. If everything goes well, there's nothing for Shepard to do.

Although, in Retribution, I was darkly amused when TIM didn't even consider calling on Shepard for help with his problem. He may say what he will about their alliance being too shaky, and him not trusting Shepard enough with this, but I think he was simply too proud to admit that he messed up so badly this time. What he was supposed to say? "Shepard, I've got an avatar of the Reapers loose in the galaxy. And yes, I made him myself. It happened because I didn't take the necessary precautions"? He probably hoped that his agents can fix this, and he barely managed at all. I wish he called for Shepard, though, it would've been priceless. Anderson considers calling for Shepard - here's the one who's not too damn proud to admit it when he's in over his head.

Of course, it's a novel, and it's for that reason that Shepard was not supposed to be involved. Well, I got carried away here.

That Reaper Avatar only got out because of the Turian raid. They were planning on killing it within a few day(s).

what massive free updates?.

ohboyherewego.jpg

All free.

For Half-Life 2 (2004) - Lost Coast (Full demo of Valve's new HDR technology.) Recently updated for better graphics.

For TF2 (2007) - Too many to count. The game has literally doubled in content and is still being updated for free to this day. Countless maps, hundred of items, new game modes all for exactly $0. They recently added a store for hats, though.

Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 (2008-2009) - Likewise, many new maps and campaigns, even had weekly game modes for L4D2, all free.

Portal 2 - Upcoming free mission pack.

Probably missing a bunch. But you get the gist of it.

and the reason that the vast moajority of developers like Valve would release it for free is beacuse they USED to develope only for PC's as PC's USED to be the only platfrom with internet access..

Dreamcast

and the other reason is that if they charged for those updates they would just be pirated and wouldnt make money anyway..

What kind of argument is that? Besides, they're put out from updates that are automatically downloaded through steam. You can't really pirate their additionnal content unless you straight out pirate their games, many of which are multiplayer so it's pretty much moot.

Blizzard is about the only company on earth that puts out "free" updates for games anymore and even then its because its part of the current xpac for WoW and that they just have finished that part yet...

AHAH WHAT? $20 mounts. Blizzard is with Activision now anyway.

not to mention that the production value (and by value I mean $$) has gone WAAY up. video games are now holding records for day 1 releases that would have only been obtainable by movies just a few years ago. if you go and look at hardware (to take a slight but related deviation) Sony lost TONS of money on the first several hundred thousand PS3's it sold. so whose to even say that EA makes any money on say for first 50k or so games its sells of any of its IPs?

So? EA is one of the biggest publisher, they certainly don't lack for investment capital to make games. Yet, they still come up with Dragon Age 2 and just recently announced DA3. Derp much?

You're just making my argument even stronger, in fact. If games cost so much to make, how come a very much smaller and independant company with no one to back them up like Valve continuously come up with AAA titles and free updates + additional content years after release?

and that brings me to my next point. if you don't think something is worth you $$ don't buy it. it isn't mandatory that you buy ANY dlc to play the game. like I stated earlier I bought some of the DLC for Fable 2 and it wasn't worth anything near what I paid for it so I haven't (and wont) buy any of the Fable 3 DLC. don't want to pay for it then don't pay for it.

And I don't. What I'm seeing, however, is how the industry is slowly falling into the pattern of cutting content from full games and charging for it later. Battlefield 3 is months away from release, yet they've already confirmed weapon and map DLCs. I'm not sure how you're able to do the mental gymnastics required to end up being ok with this.

To say Valve "continously comes up with AAA titles" is a stretch....they come up with AAA eventually, in most cases waaaaaaaaay after their target release date. Bioware has released a new "Mass Effect" game every 2-3 years since the first one. Full length games, unlike Valve and the "Half Life" episodes, which took them a year and a half to come up with 4-5 hours of game play. Let's not even get into Ep 3.

Also it's a bad move to mention Vavle as some kind of champion of free DLC considering this happened:
www.1up.com/news/portal-2-day-dlc-sparks-metacritic-backlash

So yeah....Valve recently got reamed for the same type of stuff you're calling Bioware out for. Bioware is charging you $7 for 2ish hours of DLC, Valve gave you "Lost Coast" for free....and it's about 10 minutes long. It's free though, right? The same can be said for mostly all of the "updates" you're praising Valve for.

On a side note Dreamcast is a terrible example considering the console was basically dead in the water.

Yeah, emergencies happen. I imagine next time TIM wants an avatar for study, he's going to place it into a sealed canister that self-destroys when you press a button on a remote control. Well...:devil:It's human to make mistakes.

Dear Rob,

Please use twitter as it was intended: to let other people know what you're eating, the frequency and consistency of your stool, the colour of your underpants and how good the movie you just watched was.

Refrain from divulging any other information that might otherwise be considered intelligent. It is against the rules of twitterdom. You Bioware folk are elevating the tweet-queens vexation levels with your juicy tidbits and nifty snippets.
