I'm on the ball with countdowns today - I've been counting down until something related to the Dark Knight Rises is revealed. Which, if you're interested, is in about 9 minutes. Hopefully it'll be a trailer.

Moderately interested. Nine minutes? Well, that's close enough that I'll refrain from turning the computer off and turning the 360 on for a while longer. I'll wait nine minutes.

Less then 1 minute now...

"Wanted to do 8-10 in office. Not up for another midnight. Leaving now, and office still full of folks."

When games get really close to gold, 18 hour days are the norm. Or at least they were at the company my husband used to work at.  There were times they would be working closer to 20 hours and take turns on the couch in the QA area.  I used to bring him take out so that he had something other than just pizza (which he still hates) and hang out with my knitting, just so that I could spend time with him.  And this could go on for weeks. One time, 24 hours prior to a release, when I hadn't heard from him for a week I went to his office, threated him with bodily harm, brought him home and he slept for 30 hours.  Crunch time is BRUTAL!
So to everyone at Bioware, make sure to get lots of rest and pleanty of real food.  The game will be better for it.  And I for one am willing to have a few bugs in exchange for knowing you guys kept your health and sanity.

Regards,
A former QA girlfriend

Just for the record, he didn't work at Bioware. I certainly hope that they have things a bit better over there.

Damn!

Did he by any chance worked with Team Bondi?

Cause if that thing is actually normal for game developing, I don't want to know how those poor guys suffered there.

No idea if it's "normal", just that that's what they did.  And my husband would SHOOT me (metaforically speaking) if I said where he used to work. There's a lot of overlap in the industry. Stuff gets around and I don't want him in trouble over something I said.

As I'm lead to believe, this is quite common in QA, unfortunately. My husband is an 3D Environment Artist in the gaming industry, and he's never had to endure hours like those during crunch time (Thankfully). In the past few games he's shipped, crunch time was a few 12 hour days mixed in with a whole lot of 10 hour days. Maybe he's just lucky? Regardless, I'm so sorry to hear you both went through something like that. And I hope the folks at Bioware are keeping healthy! Employee burnout is very real in this industry I'm afraid. :(

Game designers aren't lazy. Bit their time costs money and their bosses are frequently cheap, which can be a hard distinction to remember when you're dealing with a sloppy product which clearly needed more time spent on it before release.

You know these posts are kinda turning me off of going to become a game developer (It's something I'd like to pursue someday but not 100% sure)

But I do give props to the team and their families for this though.

Lets hope for no more DA2 DLC and some actual work towards redeeming the series.

After all her time in the comics, if she only has a minor role in ME3 I will be seriously disappointed.

I ain't watching them. They are kind of humiliating to gamers. They paint us out to be dude-bros who spend all day salivating over MTV and Maxim. And they ONLY show action + sports trailers. The sports trailers aren't exciting in the least (because you played the same game last year), and the action trailers have to be under a minute.

I'll be happy to watch the trailers online on Sunday morning.

If you want horror stories, we could talk about how some of the folks I went to school with, that got a jobe with a VG studio went into work one day only to fine the lights off and the door locked. Over the weekend they had shut down with no warning given to the employees. I came to find out that this is not an unheardof occurance with small developers so, if VG development is truely the route you want to go, all I'll tell you is do your home work on the studios you are applying to, be ready to work your rear end off, and get ready for the bizare hours you've been hearing about. It's not a field that everyone is cut out for.
