"Well folks, I'm sold. Just reviewed #ME3 + Kinect with @ReidBuckmaster. If you have a Kinect, you're in for good times. If not, go get one!"

Debating getting one, not completely sold on the idea yet though.

Don't get one. No need to dish out more than is necessary. Sure, you're 8 and 9 year old kids will like it, but apart from that its just not worth it.

Some people think that way only because an app has not yet been made that REALLY lets it shine. I'll reserve judgement until they show more on what they are working on.

And that's why I'm going to get ME3 for the 360 also, even though I'm already getting the CE for the PC. The Kinect (already have one) stuff sounds intriguing, especially squad control.

The 360 is 6 years old, and nearing the end of its lifespan. How much time do you think is left for one game to truly achieve supreme confidence in the kinect? Do you think ME3 will be that game that truly defines kinect potential?

Yeah, as cool as the concept for Kinect is, until devs start making games revolving entirely around motion controls and their potential, it'll always be a gimmick.

Woah man ease up there. I am fairly certain I am not eight or nine, but I enjoy the kinect. You have every right to dislike it, but if you are going to encourage people not to buy it you can at least give reasons for it.

I can agree with not buying the kinect JUST for ME3 though. The kinect is something you should consider only after you do some research and weigh the perks against the cons. I personally think its a blasts at parties (and controlling my xbox with my voice still makes me giddy), but it is lacking when it comes to single player games.

That's what microsoft is trying to change this year though. Time will tell if the kinect can become a serious single player tool.

Although for ME3 I am looking forward to voice controlled squad commands, that will free up my fingers (well thumbs mostly) and let me play without pausing so much, make combat flow better. Although I don't think i'll use it for the normal conversations, that'd just get silly.

What would be cool is if the infil class gets smoke grenades. When they cloak, enemies are visible to the infiltrator (thermal). That way they could still snipe/shoot em down while they scamper around in the smoke. :D Otherwise, I don't see much point to a smoke grenade..

This tweet may or may not have been a factor in my ordering a Kinect. :innocent:

See, that's why I gave up and just started yelling, "GARRUS! STAND DIRECTLY ON TOP OF THOSE CRATES!" Now he never fails to follow my command, in fact, it pretty much works for everyone else. No Kinect required. :wizard:

As for actually getting the Kinect, I'm waiting to see if there are any other games I'm interested in for it because I can't see myself buying one solely for ME3. Broke college student is broke after all and everyone already thinks I'm crazy enough yelling at my games without the added incentive. haha

Agreed.  I too have a Kinect and I enjoy it, especially with a party type setting.  I use it to work out sometimes and just today I played Kinect Sports 2 and enjoyed it very much.

What would be cool is if you didn't need the kinect at all. Just plug in your microphone to your controller and BAM! :D

But...sadly, that won't work.

Is there any reason (besides trying to push the Kinect) that that couldn't be implemented?

I wonder how good the voice recognition software would be, either way?

Because they'd have to program a speech recognition engine from scratch. If they go with with Kinect they don't have to bother.

Yeah and, at least console wise, thats not even counting the effect it'll have on resources. This maybe a bit off, or an extreme example as im sure it would be 'less' processor intensive, but think of it like having the drivers (engine library) and a videocard vs not having one and some basic features, like I dunno... pixel shaders.

All that stuff could be written directly into any given game engine and run off your systems RAM and CPU but it would be slow and generally just be a resource hog. Having the pre-existing driver library's and hardware support for all of the features is what more or less lets it all work at acceptable speeds. You saw that kind of thing more back when Video Cards where a new thing and you had FSAA going on in games with 'out' it being hardware supported.

Now, like I said I doubt voice recognition software would be 'that' big of a CPU hog or hit the performance much at all but as Fredzdp said they'd have to still write the whole program/engine from scratch. That's a rather huge undertaking for the level of V-R they're doing. Most games that implement it with out some massive pre-existing library/drivers to go off of do it in very simple bits. Few commands - not entire chat trees.

Add to that it would ultimately be a feature only the PC could take advantage of for 'all' that extra work as the consoles wouldn't have the resources to deal with all the added nonsense and its just not worth the extra year or so it would take to create, implement, and test.

Kinect just made it easy for them. Software and Hardware supported, no impact on console resources. Full library to pull from they just had to add the hooks in. Not that it wasn't an undertaking and doesn't require additional testing but compared to the alternative its a much simpler task.

I believe Kinect drivers are stored on the console and using Kinect features impacts performance.

It should also be easy to port this system to PC because Vista and Windows 7 have native speech recognition support. This may even be the same speech recognition software used in Kinect. Kinect for Windows also uses Windows Speech Recognition and Windows Kinect is supposed to come out soon.
