I'm guessing he got the opportunity to head up a project, and there wasn't anything like that at Bioware for him in the near future.

He states that for now he is 'Ronin'....back in the day, Samurai that had no masters were called 'Ronin'.

So maybe he's just taking a break.

No, it just means that he is currently without a 'master' (ie employer). 

Modern usage of 'Ronin' usually means 'between employers'. So he's probably taking a break for a while before whatever his next plans are.

Freddie Prinze Jr. in Mass Effect is as exciting as having Seth Green in it, at least for me. They're both huge Geeks for comics and video games and toys. Combining that with their acting careers is like geek nirvana. So having Freddie play Jimmy V. is a great prospect.
