I don't think they do the system link thing though to be honest. Pretty sure its all online but you can just tackle it solo via a private match.

I thought it was confirmed that there was no solo MP. You either play a joinable online session, or not at all.
And as with Xbox policy, all MP requires gold.
You can play solo. Whether or not you need Gold for that on Xbox, I have no clue.
You probably need gold. I say this because when you open up any MP session, solo or not you're opening up on a separate server most of the time to do it on live.
Also... When they say solo are we sure that they mean solo as in alone in the game, or solo as in running off into the map alone without the support of your team? Really they could me either.

They mean alone alone. You don't need to have 2+ people in a room to start a map. Solo doesn't mean its not online however. You can start a solo online horde session in any game that supports that usually.
Basic stuff really.
Hey, it's all new to me. I haven't played more than two rounds of any multiplayer online game not called Metal Gear Solid 4. Thanks for the intel.

In any case, as a gamer without a Gold subscription, this co-op mode is completely useless to me.
Folks without Gold can create a new gamertag on their Xbox and get a free month of Gold. Obviously you won't be able ti import your "war assets" and achievements or whatever to the gamertag you normally use, but you'll at least be able to try out MP.

You'd think Evil Chris Priestly would be embracing this.

So are Renegades openly Evil now?

Would be especially nice if Bioware just offered an offline option like Gears/Halo/CallofDuty/Uncharted/Rage/L4D/Portal2 does....

They... do? I was unaware of this. And Uncharted ought not to count since it's PS3-only and they don't have online subscriptions.

As far as I know most of those aren't technically offline. At least on Live that is. Though I haven't played a multiplayer game on live for a long time. ME3 is the only one in a while to get mr to want to play.

They all support split-screen co-op (for sure). For Uncharted, I'm specifically referring to Uncharted 3 (the newest one). But fair enough on it being a PS3 exclusive.

The entire Gears, Halo, and Left 4 Dead series on the 360 are offline for sure (played those via split-screen co-op). The others I know for sure have split-screen co-op.

even if it was splitscreen, most xbox360 games only support 2 players it seems and your need another 360 to go 4 players. Too bad it isnt splitscreen where your friend could make a clone account to play with you online like how black ops and MW3 are online now and how halo has been since halo 3 that I recall.
That'd be fine, far better than solo or a mode you can't use at all. 2-player co-op worked fine across the Gears/Halo/L4D series and was a lot of fun (even if more players could technically be allowed)

In regard to those games' co-op functionality, though, are we discussing the single-player campaigns with a second player tagging along? Or are these specifically co-op campaigns that can be played separately without a need for Gold?

Same campaign with a tag-along friend. Can be played online and off.
Available system link/LAN parties with up to four people per console off-line multiplayer in most.
Both of those functions do not need Gold account subscriptions.

To the former, that's different. That's nothing to really compare with since ME3 isn't offering (nor should it, IMO) a co-op version of the story.
For the latter though... well that's something.

Would let non-golds do solo stuff. Then again just a off-line solo variant is also common with that kind of stuff. Rainbow 6 Vegas had the ability to just go at the T-hunt things solo. Think GoW2-3 has that. I know Halo Firefights did too.
Hopefully they'll add that in, preferably as a patch not DLC.
