What I don't like about temp squadmates is that character development is going to take a serious hit if they only stick with us for one or two missions. It's going to be ME2 all over again: lots of interesting concepts that fail to evolve into interesting characters because of lack of dialogue.

Quality before quantity.

When was there character development in ME? Most of it happened in between games anyway. Character interaction was there, and the shift in attitude after loyality missions, but that was that. I think ME3 should focus more on the war and Shepard him/herself, rather than squaddies. They had their shining moments in ME1/2.

This seems like the only way of giving each character their moment to shine/wrap up their arc. If Bioware decided to only have 5 or 6 squaddies and then cycle the rest out with cameo appearances, there would be an uproar among fans of those characters. If there are valid story reasons for character's coming and going (ie: Tali helps during the missions on Rannoch, Wrex fights with you on Tuchanka and then leaves to lead the Krogan, Miranda and Jacob have their dialogue and story moments during your confrontation with Cerberus), I have no problem with that arrangement. In other words, it's a big galaxy with a big cast of characters and it would be impossible for Bioware to have a permanent squad of 16 characters, most of whom can be dead to begin with.

Having squadmates come and go as the story progresses is the only way to let use use all our favourite characters, whilst never letting the squad get so large that it's literally impossible to have them interact with each other because there's too many combinations.

I like it, it's certainly preferable to ME2's bloated squad.

I agree, and am very much looking forward to seeing how it works out.

Will be a nice change from the usual, where you collect squadmembers to build a full set.

I'm going to wait until I play it before I judge whether it's a "nice" change or not.  I'm concerned that we won't have much control over our squadmates' builds.  Will Bioware throw a new squadmate at us each mission?  If they do, will they really expect the average player to level up the new squadmate in question?

They did it for Liara in LotSB, and I would imagine squadmates are sticking around for quite a bit longer than that.

That or its a possibility she would rather enjoy working on less stressful titles. I mean, David Jaffe, director of the insanely popular God of War series, passed to role onto someone else after the second game for similar (but not entirely) the same reason.

Plus, when using Twitter you have to concise due to the 140 character limit, so posting cryptic comments isn't exactly THAT unordinary.

"Levels" getting approved at this point are probably the N7/side missions.

Regarding Christina Norman, despite her high profile, she was a mid-tier developer at BioWare (yes, "lead gameplay designer" is middle tier). It's probable that her new position is a step up the food chain. Also, she might have been interested in relocating, especially if where she's moving is closer to where she grew up.

Honestly while the marry go round of squadmates sounds interesting I think I would like to have maybe a few that will stay with me to use. if anything LI should be a candidate for this, with even the Ex LI Squadmate with them, instant drama, at least it would be good to get it out of the way that way you know.

And hey, I really do appreciate you're working late!!

Oh, and why do I feel a certain amount of discomfort hearing that C.Norman is leaving...??? Even if she got a better opportunity somewhere else... I read her departure as being not very loyal to the ME3 project. This of course may have many motives - valid motives - and it need not be egotism, to be sure. Could as well be the work environment, the bosses, some policy, some personal issue... Ask yourself: you work on this high-profile, awesome Posted Image project in a prominent job.... what would it take for YOU to make you leave NOW...?? Just asking.... but I'd say something not trivial...

In any case Thank You, Christina and all the best!

So Christina Norman is leaving the ME3 team or she's leaving Bioware?
Because either one of those, is the best news I heard about ME3 in a long time :D
Now, maybe we can finally get rid of that stupid ammo system she so fanatically promoted:police:

"Tali will be able to join your team, but nothing's permanent in #ME3 - it's a story of full-scale war, with lots of twists."

Whaaaaat??^^
Oh you...rearranging the word permanent to describe how non linear ME3 is...making me think no squadmember is permanent...

Or maybe not!

I'm not sure why people are complainig about this so much... if a squadmember is not a permanent one during missions, it doesn't mean he's not at a central comand somewhere, where you could interact with them whenever you wanted (let's just remember that's how ME2 and ME1 used to work... you could only speak to people once you were aboard the ship, and not during missions, this would be similar, except the fact that your ship can't fit everybody, so if you wanna talk to them you'll need to pay them a visit... in person)
I must say, I'm really excited about this, because in ME2 I tried swapping squadmates as often as I could, just to see the different interactions they had in certain missions, so, no single squadmate was permanent for me throughout the game
