I am somewhat acquainted with the reasoning behind the decision, and it was far more involved and had farther reaching ramifications than simply "slapping a 2 on it."

Oh, I'm sure it was all focus tested to death and so forth- I recall Mike saying before pre-release when the topic was brought up something like how they wanted to keep it simple with just Dragon Age II to not muddy the waters with too many subtitles should any expansion or DLC come out where you could still call it "DA2: 'Insert Subtitle Here.'" I just think the end result is that it comes across as fairly uninspired, even if a bunch of brainpower went into the decision. And as has been brought up in many of the reviews, both from users here and  professional critics, the "2" comes loaded with all sorts of expectations the game really can't hold up.

I think John Walker points out the naming mess best in his piece on DA2 from Rock, Paper, Shotgun:

Of course it’s impossible to come to Dragon Age II with such a clean  slate. Because at the very least, you’re expecting Dragon Age: Origins. And you’re not getting it. Any sequel that’s a regression of the  original, however intentionally, is always going to struggle in  comparison. There can’t have been any surprises at BioWare that a game  one third the length (in fact, not enormously longer than the half-price follow-on for Origins, Awakenings), set in a massively smaller world,  was going to met with at least raised eyebrows. You can’t really stick  “II” on the end of your game title and expect otherwise.

I think saying “II” was probably this game’s biggest mistake. When it feels more like a sister product to Awakenings than a full, unique  game, surely it would have more sense to market it that way, even at  full price? It’s not a sequel to the epic Dragon Age: Origins, in any  meaningful sense. When I think about the breathtaking scale, the depth  of history, the religious conflicts, the horrendous racism and classism, and moving, emotional narrative, it seems daft to have considered this  the second incarnation of that. It’s a game set in a single city, with  nowhere else to go, exploring six years of a group of people’s lives.  It’s confined, which is fine, but it’s not the epic RPG we were  reasonably expecting.

Another mental exercise I’ve done is to  wonder what I’d have thought had this been sold to me as another Dragon  Age sub-game, a different perspective on the same world. And while I’d  have had the same issues with the same significant mistakes, I don’t  think I’d feel quite as thrown by it.

Can we agree to call a  mulligan on this one? Let’s retitle it, “Dragon Age: Kirkwall”, and  BioWare can take a lot more time making the real Dragon Age II.

I never stopped engaging the fanbase... except during my 2-week vacation. I've always been here. It's just a lot more difficult to get a word in edgewise when every other post is insulting my job, my intelligence, my employer, my project, my industry, etc. It's a lot easier to actually have a conversation now with more interesting topics being discussed, with people who prefer to have a discussion rather than an argument... or a trial.

You can understand why people would get the impression that the developers did disengage though, right? I understand why you would avoid threads with trolls and insults aimed at you, and I certainly would avoid them myself. But there was a distinct lack of counter-argument in favor of DA2 on this forum by developers, and many of us are wondering what that means. 

I'm not saying I expect you to engage on every topic of criticism, but as you noted in this very thread, DA2 is a very different game from its predecessor -and people loved DA:O.  I'd like to hear more on why you (Bioware) think the criticism is wrong or inaccruate. Or if you think it's right on the money.  Most of us are here because we are dedicated to the Dragon Age IP and have a great interest in its future, whether we liked DA2 or not. 

Also, it's easy to shame idiots into silence using maturity and professionalism. I've seen you do it many times.

Assassins Creed 2 was compared to 1. Same for Mass Effect and Uncharted etc etc.
Even a name change does not change the quality of the game and I seriously cannot fathom how people are blind to the things were DA2 is lagging so much behind in terms of standarts set by the genre.

Most of us aren't. We're just having a lark because we need a laugh. I keep argung that you can't just not compare it to DAO and that it is just ridiculous to do so. It's human nature at the least, and it was marketed as a sequel to DAO at the most/worst?  So, I am right there with ya. But sit back, have a laugh, let off some disappointment steam (within reason and no trolling or name calling).  

We can all agree on other threads (or disagree, nicely) about what you said. But here, make a up a name or two..or three. Some serious, some not (okay most not, looks at Nepp:P).
