All righty...here is my question. Our main host is moving across the country and while he is gone I am going to buy a PC to run from the house.

I know next to nothing about hardware. I am very much a software kinda guy so I am feeling very out of my element here. We are going to move the whole server vault and databases over and I am not worried about that.

We have NWNX2 installed and SQL as well on the server now.

Can i get by just buying a desktop PC if the ONLY thing running on it is going to be the NWN Server? Hoping to spend about 300 or so is all.

I did a speed test as well...dont know if any of this helps;

Any and all suggestions would be awesome. How much RAM and Memory do i need as well?

Really will depend on speed of the PC you run. Single Core is ideal, but a dual core with a fast processor will help for sure.

The connection seems fine unless you have 40+ players.

You going to run Linux or Windows?

Honestly you'd probably be better off to buy an old used single core or dual core machine for your 300, shove it in a corner and let it do it's thing once you configure it.

That is what I am going to do is just give it its own corner. I would love to run Linux but I do not know it so i think it would be smarter to run Windows atm.

And yeah we have about 10 to 20 a night so no huge numbers atm....(which is good tbh as we have what i think is JUST the right number of folks.)

Ok my suggestions then are to find an older single core or dual core box, don't bother with monitor or anything, just borrow your own for setup.

If you can get it run win2k3. 4 gigs of RAM should be lots. My suggestion if you go single core is aim for 2500 or higher for speed. If you have a lot of high traffic areas, more processing power will help as it has to send/recieve a lot of player locations and sync them up. If you were running permanently my advice would be different of course.

Trying to make this cost effective. NWN was made to run on old hardware so you should be able to get a decent server box for a decent price. Not sure what you have in terms of remote access software, but something like Radmin or something to access the remote box might be useful (even over local connection).

Let me know if there is any other questions

Any dual core processor and 2gb of RAM should make it work without any problem.
