so I just watched the last ever episode of Stargate Universe and possibly the last chapter of Stargate ever... a good show that grew to become great and died far too early. with Caprica (a bit iffy at points but good overall) and V (a see-saw show, some good, some bad but had potential) already dead and buried it seems there just isn't that much sci-fi TV left anymore. there hasn't been any Star Trek since Enterprise, Babylon 5 isn't even likely to have any more TV movies (it's Crusade spinoff being another show that died without ever getting a real chance) and now Stargate is gone with no spinoff planned and apparently plans for TV movies all cancelled

so can anyone recomend some good sci-fi that's still alive? I've tried Dr Who and just never got into it for some reason. someone in US TV networks obviously thinks that reality TV and WWE wrestling count as sci-fi but shockingly I disagree. so I'm struggling to find something. there's still good shows on TV (thankfully Castle's been renewed, House has it's ups and downs but remains a good show and Game of Thrones is good so far) but there's a sci-fi shaped gap in my TV watching habits

IMO Fringe is one of the most well-written series on television

Alphas looks interesting

But yeah the Space Scifi Category is looking quite slim as of late.

Just checked out the Syfy website and it seem they are nothing but crappy reality Tv Ghost shows now.

There is no space opera left on TV now, other than reruns. There might be some eventually, but at least two years until we hear anything. Sci-Fi on the whole is dead right now, Fringe is probably the only sci-fi show left and if you watched the X-Files and Night Stalker it comes over pretty weak. The less said about the Event the better. I guess there's Dr. Who as well but that's always struck me as more fantasy than sci-fi (particularly with Moffat at the helm).

Fantasy seems to be it right now with Game of Thrones, Being Human, True Blood and Camelot. Supernatural was okay too until Kripke left.

What about going back to some of the older stuff, like Space: Above and Beyond and Farscape? Or Eureka, that's pretty science-y.

I have seen a few episodes of The Event. While the series is not for me, as I cannot become invested in a story without end, it does seem well written and well acted. It should not be difficult to catch up this early in the series.

Lately Sci-fi has taken a back seat to fantasy imo. Nothing in the genre stands out right now.

I second Stanley's picks, especially Farscape and Eureka.  Eureka being of the few sci-fi shows that Syfy (God I hate that name change...) has left.  It's a bit quirky, and is a comedy, but pretty entertaining.  As for Farscape, it just damned epic.

Farscape is indeed great, I especially liked how they tried some rather crazy sounding ideas (a puppet as an alien, a cartoon episode, etc) and made them work. there are still some older sci-fi shows I should probably catch up on though, so at least there is that, but it's a sad shame if there's so little new

I highly recommend adding the series Firefly and the film, Serenity to any Sci-Fi collection; possibly the last best TV offering in that genre.

I agree with this. I can´t think of a really great show at the moment.

Farscape, Firefly, Babylon 5 etc are all awesome but they aren´t new.
Fringe is a good show but just remindes me in several ways too much of X-Files.

Eureka is a fun show as well but sometimes a bit too goofy for my taste. Still worth watching.

It seems the days of "outstanding" shows are over (at the moment). Being a big TV fan that sucks for me, i can´t think of any show, no matter what genre, that i´m really into at the moment

Edit: Someone call Joss Whedon and tell him to come up with a new show...or a Buffy movie :P

I'm betting that Sci-Fi will be on the back burner for a few years and then come back.  It seems like a normal cycle for Television.

Only Sci-Fi shows still running right now off the top of my head are Doctor Who and Torchwood.

Well, there is Sanctuary. At least a Stargate fan will see some familiar faces. I was none too impressed with the first season, but season two was stronger.

There is a new show on TNT coming in June called Falling Skies. It is sci-fi as it pertains to an alien attack. I have no idea if it will be any good or not but it looks to have a lot of action at least.

I know Torchwood runs, but isn't it out of Production? Or am I missing good, new stuff?

From what I understand, Starz or Encore, I forget which, is going to make a new Torchwood sometime soon and Capt. Jack is going to be in it again.  And I am ashamed to say that I forgot to mention Firefly and Serenity...  Good call Elhanan.

As for Doctor Who, I have been an on and off again fan since the 80's.  I love british humor so it's right up my alley.  Sorry you couldn't get into it OP.

If you can get past the political bias, I enjoyed both seasons of Dark Angel quite a bit.

Never watched all of "Dark Angel" I'll have to drop that into the Netfilx Queue...
Fox went wonky for a while, producing a bunch of Shows that had promise but only aired for like 3 Episodes..."Harsh Realm" was like that, but I don't know how much has been released on DVD..
Good news on Torchwood...I was a Fan.

In my opinion all good American/Canadian Sci-Fi will be dead with the expiry of Smallville tomarrow night, Till Eureka returns anyway....
As for Doctor Who tell me what is confusing to you and I'm sure I can help clear it up.

Agreed.

Maybe some of shows I have listed below are not "pure" Sci Fi and some may seem "childish" (yet what are you to do when you have run out of good shows you want to watch but don't rewatch anymore since you have them memorized) but I'd rather watch shows like that than to go watch wrestling. Anyways here is my list:

Andromeda
Babylon 5
Black Hole High
Farscape
Firefly
Galidor
Mutant X
SeaQuest
Secret World of Alex Mack
The Outer Limits
The Pretender
The Sentinel
The Tripods
The Twilight Zone
X-Files

BTW your statement about wrestling made me remember something that maybe I hope someone can assist me with figuring out. When I'm out in town and I raise my right eyebrow in confusion during a conversation. A few will laugh and make some remark to wrestling (others only do the last part) and when I ask for explaination they claim I already know. HUH? What memo did I miss?
I still don't get what in the blazes it is. Can someone tell me please?:innocent:

Most of the above arn't even on TV now. As to your Question a very famous American Wrestler named the Rock would do that constantly at momments such as that, and called it "The Peoples' eyebrow."

But yeah Scifi seems pretty dead, half of the fantasy shows are crap, and to top it Off Anime has dried up. Imo we owe Comcast for the fact so much programing now is crap, so it doesn't hit main night TV shows and those damnable sitcoms.

A pilot for the new US version of Torchwood will go into production later this year or early 2012, I believe starring the same actor who played Jack Harkness in the BBC version.
