I'm really excited, I bought ME1 during the Steam sale this weekend.

I've been downloading ME1 tonight for about an hour or so, and it's almost finished.

Any non-spoilerish advice before I start my very first game?

I have played ME2 before, but I have no idea what to expect with ME1.

It can get pretty tedious at times, but the last few missions make it worth it. At times, you will be extreme bored and frustrated, but the awesome moments are awesome enough that you'll be glad you played it.

Biotic Shepards are quite a bit more powerful and useful in ME1.

You will spend a lot of time managing inventory. I'm sorry about that. Also, weapons and armor you get later have "mod" slots, into which you can equip enhancing items. Shiny!

You need to spend points to get decent charm/intimidate scores in your first playthrough. You unlock the potential to spend points in these disciplines by being paragon or renegade, but you have to spend points to get the good options later in game. Some people choose to do this, some choose not to.

Bring Down the Sky is generally considered worthwhile DLC. Pinnacle Station is significantly less popular.

There are sites where you can convert your ME2 facecode to an ME1 equivalent. This is generally considered better than making an ME1 shep who looks awesome, and then finding out that he or she looks funny when imported into 2. Sheps imported from ME1 to ME2 don't get face codes. ;_;

Oh, and one last thing: when exploring a planet, you'll get markers on your map. There are always places and items on the planet that do not appear on your map. If you don't consider it cheating and want to get every item/mineral/whatever, it may be worth it to peek at the Mass Effect Wiki when you're done exploring a planet the "normal" way. It'll save you a lot of backtracking and Mako LoLs later.

That's everything I can think of right now. Good hunting.

choose either paragon or renegade and get those points up as high as you can before you do the Virmire main mission which I would suggest doing last.

This is good advice, but I believe the problem can also be circumvented by doing Wrex's sidequest, instead.

Congrats! You're about to play a great game.
Gameplay advice:

Cover system is a bit different than in ME2. In ME1 you automatically go into cover if you move towards it. Storm speed is alot faster in this game, so take advantage of that.

Powers each have their own individual cooldowns (no global system like in 2). Adepts are IMO the most powerful class in ME1. Also makes squadmates more effective.

Pistols are probably the best overall weapon with marksman, but shotguns are nice too because they have much larger range than in ME2. Also, it doesn't matter where you hit an enemy, it always does the same damage (so no benefits from headshots).

If Shepard isn't a Engineer/Infiltrator/Sentinel, you will want to take someone with tech skills on missions, for the decryption minigames.

Definitely invest about 8-10 skill points into either charm or intimidate.

Don't kill yourself being OCD and trying to find every single thing on every single planet. Most people who do this get bored.

The inventory is not that bad if you're not trying to constantly update gear on every single squadmate. If you don't use a squaddie, don't worry about their gear.

Don't play a soldier unless you want the most boring and easy gameplay experience possible.

Have fun, the game is awesome :)

This isn't a problem if you level your Charm or Intimidate skill and do Virmire last.

Thanks all for the great advice.

But OMFG what is up with 1280x800 max resolution??!?!!

Do I have to install a mod to be able to run this at 1920x1080?

I want my money back!

Lies. If you manage to immerse yourself into the game, nothing about ME1 is boring. The only parts that are frustrating are the vehicle sections.

Look closer, there is an arrow you can click to scroll down for more resolutions. It kind of blends into the background.

Make sure to enable the dev console in game.  Here's the instructions along with a listing of adjustments you can make.  masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Cheat . I found it helpful at points.

I think you have to access it through the configuraton utility off the main splash startup screen.

To open locked things you have to have someone in the party with tech skills with points in them.  So if you want to open doors, boxes and general stuff you have to have a tech in the party unlike ME2.  Biotics are the strongest fighters after a very few levels, but Soldiers are almost unkillable with half-way decent gear and the Fitness skill Immunity.  Personally I would say figure on playing multiple times to see what you like and generally enjoy yourself.  Also one more thing, you will have to play at different difficulty levels to open up the next difficulty, but whatever you do DON'T DO A PURE NEW GAME WHEN PLAYING YOUR FIRST INSANITY!!  For you first insanity run, pick a character you have already completed the game with and run a NG+ game, you will understand once you start but it will save your hair.

Do the UNC missions. Highly rewarding. Also talk to your crew after all the story mission, Oh and do the few "loyalty" missions there are.

Every random planet you land on has a smooth path to the main destination (side quest or whatever), but it's not outlined very well on the map. Finding these paths avoids a lot of anti-gravity mako frustration.

The inventory is pretty bad by RPG standards. I'd recommend equipping the best stuff on all your dudes at their lockers on the Normandy periodically and selling everything else (except maybe some upgrades) whenever your at a hub.

Geth pulse rifle works well as an assault rifle even if your not train in assault rifles.

Keeping a tech like Garrus or Kaiden with you and leveled up on their decryption/electronics skills allows you to loot almost everything you come by, This can add to the inventory problem unless you use the afor-mentioned bulk selling method.

The end of the game will feel more epic than you though possible from a video game.

Do the main plot in this order: Therum, Feros, Noveria, Virmire. Get the Bring down the Sky (if it was not included), it is fun and you get awesome omnitool. Omnigel, omnigel and omnigel. Make sure you have it always (wich you will, you get so much pointless crap). Enjoy, game is a bit clumsy but still absolutely brilliant.

That is the best way of saying it I've ever heard. Expect a lot of boring parts and random tasks. But when you see the best of ME1, ME2 will seem a lot worse (story wise and on an epic level especially).

And the order above and below me is the way to go. Feels the most natural.

I feel like I shouldn't recommend an order, but I agree this works really well.

My without a question biggest advice is this; when you reach the Citadel for the first time, there will be a huge amount of side quests opening up for you. Don't OCD with these, you can come back later and pick off a few at a time. This is far better than staying on the Citadel with loading screens (and the elevators a k a masked loading screens) every ten steps as you're fumbling, trying to find your way.

The Citadel is pretty much a technical disaster, but there's still lots of nice interaction to be had here - when you feel you're getting frustrated of it, go finish a mission or two before coming back =)

EDIT: I had to delete my guide because it was based around a single concept that I just discovered isn't true.

The concept was to get as much Paragon/Renegade score in an initial playthrough and then play through a second time with all conversation options unlocked. Unfortunately Bioware suck and the only thing that is reset on a second playthrough is Paragon/Renegade scores.

Wow this is a lot of excellent advice!

The interface was really clunky and it's taken a while to get used to it.
  • Compared to ME2, I feel like I don't have quite as much direct control over my companions, or it is a bit difficult to manage all of them properly, not only in combat but the companion inventory and upgrades are a bit unwieldy.
  • In order to change one of the companion weapons, it seems I need to have another weapon of the same type available, I can't just remove a shotgun from Tali and give it to Wrex, for example, unless I have another shotgun that nobody is using.
  • During combat, in ME2 I could really notice the difference if I equip companions with sniper rifles, shotguns or assault rifles. In ME1, the difference is not quite as noticeable for companion attacks.

But there is something pretty amazing about ME1 that gives me the impression it might be a lot more fun overall compared with ME2.

I made it to the Citadel and it feels like a real freaking location. I'm finally free to walk around and explore it. The Citadel in ME2 is a tiny, tiny area map that completely blows after experiencing the ME1 Citadel.

If all the important locations are this expansive, this game is going to be a lot more enjoyable than ME2, which I really liked.

However, I'm stuck on the Citadel, someone please tell me how to get back to the Normandy? There is no dock and the mass transit podiums don't have a "Return to Normandy" option.

2 questions:

(1) Is there any place on the Citadel where I can change my companions?

(2) How do I get back to the Normandy?

1. No.
2. There is an elevator in C-Sec that goes to docking bay and tadaa, Normandy.

Finish the 'expose Saren' quest to get off the Citadel for the first time.
After that you can always board the normandy via the main elevator in c-sec

I don't know if it has been mentioned, but don't worry too much about the collection quests. Meaning collecting minerals, collecting data disks, etc. They have no effect on the story and the only gameplay reward is credits and XP. Finding all 21 keepers also has no effect on the story, but it's kind of fun the first time to really explore every inch of the Citadel. And yes, all the main storyline mission areas are much more expansive than the "shooter tunnels" of ME2.

Lots of people around here like to unequivocally trash ME1 as though it did nothing right, but it is definitely superior to ME2 in all the ways that matter.
