And yes, all the main storyline mission areas are much more expansive than the "shooter tunnels" of ME2.
Just downloaded ME1 from Steam! Any advice for noob?

Thanks all for the great advice.
But OMFG what is up with 1280x800 max resolution??!?!!
Do I have to install a mod to be able to run this at 1920x1080?
I want my money back!
Look closer, there is an arrow you can click to scroll down for more resolutions. It kind of blends into the background.
Whew! thanks so much for the quick reply. I almost had a coronary.
I'll restart and try that!
You paid 5.00 for a game we all paid a lot more for and you want your money back because you can't find the highest resolution? Wow, just, wow.

There'll be alot going on at first, with many quests and piles of information hurled at you, and numerous locations to check out and people to talk to. But don't let it all daunt you. Take your time, and you'll be rewarded with a wonderfully enchanting and majestic experience. I can't praise this game highly enough!

(1) When you explore mountainous terrain with the Mako, don't always try to use the shortest route. On many planets, there are ways to almost everything where you needn't do frustrating climbs. You can reach all quest locations easily that way, though to get all resources on a planet, frustrating climbs cannot be avoided.
(2) If you're unsure of things, use a checklist to make sure you did every quest. You can download Teryx' famous checklists here.
(3) The Mako has a *cannon*, not just a machine gun. It's way more effective and easily overlooked (I only found out in my third playthrough). Use it with the right mouse button, and use the zoom function to attack distant targets.
(4) Killing enemies with the Mako reduces the xp for killing enemies significantly. Thus I recommend killing everything on foot if you want to maximize your level. Killing thresher maws on foot in ME1 nets a lot of xp and it is *easy*, way easier than with the Mako - just stay out of the auto-targeting range and keep strafing.
(5) Reaching level 60 will give you a bonus when you import your Shepard into ME2. Level 60 cannot be reached in one playthrough without cheating. In my experience, you need to be at least level 52 to reach level 60 in the second playthrough.
(6) As opposed to others, I recommend the sequence Therum, Noveria, Feros, Virmire. The reason is that Feros has a more difficult persuasion option (Intimidate 10/Charm 12). Persuasion on Noveria is quite a bit easier (Intimiate 8/Charm ? at the highest).

1. Keep track of all the planets and systems you visited. Write it on a paper so you don't end up visiting the same planet twice.
2. The game with all bonus mako missions will take you about 50 hours of play. Useful to know if you are into planning your gaming time.
4. You need either a crowd control biotic power (lift, singularity, or even throw) or a shotgun against the meleeing husks. They are very annoying to fight against as an Infiltrator/Engineer without bonus powers.
5. If you really really want to maximum experience, kill things in mako and use cheats for some bonus experience. It's not worth it to grief yourself fighting geth colosi and thresher maws on foot.
6. You need 1 000 000 credits to unlock an achievement that opens you some very nice gear at some vendors. So gather weapons and items then sell them all.

There are fantastic checklists that you can download and print out, with basically no spoilers. Just allows you to put a mark next to the planets and tells you what you'll find down there

I'm really excited, I bought ME1 during the Steam sale this weekend.
I've been downloading ME1 tonight for about an hour or so, and it's almost finished.
Any non-spoilerish advice before I start my very first game?
I have played ME2 before, but I have no idea what to expect with ME1.
Get ready for an amazing story. Don't skip any dialogue. Explore, go slow and get immersed into the game. Even if it takes you six months to finish the game DO IT and take your time. Don't rush through anything.

Glad you like it! ^^ I don't agree with your feelings on the matter, but it's just nice that you're not hating on the ME1 Citadel the way I am - obviously liking is good for you =)naughty99 wrote...
I made it to the Citadel and it feels like a real freaking location. I'm finally free to walk around and explore it. The Citadel in ME2 is a tiny, tiny area map that completely blows after experiencing the ME1 Citadel.
As for switching party members, wasn't it possible to go into the Map screen and then hit a button from there? I may be wrong.

Sounds great, especially for someone like me who racked up a few hundred hours on Oblivion without even touching the main quest.

LOL I think your sarcasm detector might be is out of batteries
I liked ME2 as well, it's just that in most locations, the area where you can walk is really small. The Citadel was so cool in both games, but there were a lot of areas like the Presidium with the fountains etc where ME2 doesn't let you actually walk around. Visiting the Citadel in ME1 felt like finally getting access to those areas.KiddDaBeauty wrote...

I love the lore of ME and the history of the world that they created is so rich and interesting. Hopefully some day technology will advance to the point where a true open "worlds" sandbox ME game can be developed with dozens or hundreds of whole planets available to explore.

To open locked things you have to have someone in the party with tech skills with points in them. So if you want to open doors, boxes and general stuff you have to have a tech in the party unlike ME2.

Use Tali, and level her up in the tech skill right way. I took her on every mission, that way your skills won't be too low to collect loot on uncharted worlds, .
Can you explain how this works?
If Tali has high tech skills, for example, is it possible to have your companions open locked containers and do the hacking minigame, or does one of her talents overload the lock if she shoot its with Overload or Damping?
Or does Shepard get a bonus for the hacking minigame if the companion has high tech skills?

The higher the encryption skills of your squaddie's the more/easier it is for you the player to unlock things. They don't do the unlocking, but their skill levels help you. ( if I remember right, that is)naughty99 wrote...

Locks come in three difficulties. To be able to unlock something, you need someone in your party with the corresponding skill at a certain level. The tech attacks from those two skills also come in three different levels, and those correspond to the level of lock you can open.jacobOriley wrote...

But this just lets you play the minigame, and this also comes in three difficulty levels. As far as I can tell, these minigames do not become easier with a higher skill.

Do Wrex's side quest.
Once again, the first reply is the best.
Do a main mission, then keep doing side missions and keep talking to Wrex until you get the side quest. Don't ask why. Just do it.

Does the companion medicine skill work in a similar way? (i.e., doesn't help to bring 2 squad members with mediocre medicine skill, better to bring one with high medicine skill)
