Description:
Neverwinter Nights 2 was running fine for me for months. I got the ERROR_DX_INSTALL message when I first installed the game, but I ignored it and everything went fine. The game updated without a hitch, and I made it as far as Act III without even a single glitch. Absolutely no problems.

Then, a few days ago, the game stopped working entirely. After pressing "Play", the Neverwinter Nights 2 splash screen (nwloader) appears, then my screen goes black for about half a second before returning to the desktop.  Nwloader remains in the taskbar for about ten more seconds and then closes. The logo screens never show up and no sound is heard. I also get no error messages. This happens every time I start NWN2.

I can recall only two things that have changed on my rig since the problem began. First, I installed Portal 2 on the machine (it runs without a hitch) and I added a Bluetooth dongle (Cirago Bluetooth BTA3210 v2.1 EDR class 2 Micro Bluetooth Adapter) for a wireless headset of mine.

I read in the tech support forums that a bluetooth dongle has caused problems with NWN2 for some people, so I yanked it out first and restarted NWN2, no success.

I then tried uninstalling Microsoft Visual C++ and reinstalling it. I now have fresh copies of the x86 and x64 versions of Microsoft Visual C++ 2005, 2008 and 2010 Redistributables installed. No luck.

I can't uninstall Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 as it is part of Windows 7, but I did install Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile and Extended. No dice.

For good measure, I tried installing the Direct X 9.0c redistributable from the NWN2 DVD, along with a newer one that I found online. No change.

I also reinstalled NWN2 and tried using the Windows XP SP2 compatibility modes on the executables. The problem still persists.

Out of desperation, I even upgraded to Windows 7 SP1, and the problem still persists.

The worst part is that NWN2 had no problems on my rig previously. It was happy with Windows 7 x64, with having My Documents on a RAID, and with the NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT and Rocketfish sound card.

Then one day, poof. And nothing I do makes a dent in it.

Any ideas? I could sure use some!

I remembered one last thing that changed my problems began. I uninstalled NWN1 from my PC.

It was installed in the C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Atari\\NWN\\ directory, while NWN2 was installed in C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Atari\\Neverwinter Nights 2\\. NWN1 wouldn't run, so I reinstalled it to C:\\. Ironically, NWN1 now runs fine, but NWN2 is still busted.

Could the uninstall of NWN1 affect NWN2? They don't share registry keys or anything, right? And if they do, a reinstall of NWN2 should have fixed it, but NWN2 is still busted after several reinstalls.

This one has me stumped.

When you reinstalled NWN2 did yu completely erase your NWN2 folder in your My Documents or is your new install using the same as the old one? Maybe something in the My Documents NWN2 folder is corrupted.

Yes. I moved my old Neverwinter Nights 2 folder out of My Documents and onto my desktop. I also erased the Atari folder and all its contents. The installer created new Neverwinter Nights 2 folders in both places, but it still won't start.

Is there any way to get the game to spit out a log file that I could look at? I wish I had an error message to work with to get an idea of what went wrong.

A couple more updates:

I uninstalled the DVD version of NWN2 and then purchased and downloaded the Steam version. However, I get the _exact_ same error. A black screen appears for one second before disappearing, as if the game was trying to start before crashing out.

Also, I found a file, "WindowsInstaller-KB893803-v2-x86.exe" bundled with both the Steam and DVD versions of NWN2. I cannot get it to install on my machine. I believe it updates Windows Installer to 3.1v2.

Do I need this? Or is the version of Windows Installer that comes with Windows 7 (version 5, I think?) good enough?

I can't advise regarding Windows 7 since I run NWN2 on Mac OS X and Windows XP Pro only.

Maybe you should try creating a brand new user account and reinstalling with that account just to try to rule out some kind of conflict with other things you have installed. Very strange.

I solved it!!!

OK, so this one was very weird, but I have confirmed that cloning/mirroring my display onto a secondary monitor was the cause of my problem.

My NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT has an S-video output. I frequently use this S-video connection to clone/mirror my desktop onto an old CRT TV to watch Hulo or iTunes (it's standard-definition, but for the price of an S-video cable it's worth it). However, cloning my desktop onto a standard-definition TV, at 1024x768 and 480i respectively, as never been that stable with my particular NVIDIA graphics card.

And it turned out that it had killed Neverwinter Nights for me.

In the past, every time I had played NWN2, I happened to have display cloning/mirroring turned off. Recently I had left it on, and while it was on Neverwinter NIghts 2 would crash on startup 100% of the time. NWN2 even runs fine when I extend my desktop across multiple displays, but using display cloning with my NVIDIA card kills it every time!

I never would have expected that to be the problem, especially since the NVIDIA logo is splashed across the screen every time NWN2 starts, but there you go.

If you can't get the game to start, add turning off display cloning to your list of cures to try!
